Space Wolves Wolfwing

It's a great conversation. I think I'll try to convert this wolverine model, which I just borrowed a few days ago and should arrive today or tomorrow ;-)

The sculpture hasn't changed forever, but I heard rumors that logan, ragnar and ulrik would be resculped for a second wave release of space wolves, but I doubt it will be in the near future... :) Plus I will maybe have my first first conversation and maybe unique model :)

I'll definately convert logan too because I hate his sculpture except the head ;-)

My LR Redeemer (but it's WIP):

I have to redo edge highlights but I don't know, I think I don't do any blendings, or would you? I've added battle damage, so it would be hard to do :-/

The front ramp will be getting metal stripes... any further ideas how to improve it? And BTW some nice words would be great :D because I'm such a lazy painter and usually sometimes I don't paint for weeks or months :-/

greetings,
Johannes

Ok, normally I'm now going to assume zenithal light, but I'm not sure, it would mean that the whole bottom whould be brighter than the sides... maybe it's "nicer" to assume that the light comes from above the front in this case, so that the front and upper part is brighter than the backside and the back of the sides?

I think I'll only work with badab black from GW or devlan mud to shade or should I also use a very thin layer of space wolves grey in the front direction?

Ok, further highlights (edge highlighting) and a bit blended...

What do you think? Normally the colors are brighter... or hm it might be the angle I'm viewing on my laptop... But I think the dust is at least more brownish/black than it seems.

Do you maybe have some tips on how to reduce the dry brushed looking? At first I thought the armour looks pretty good with some different drybrushes and then a very thin layer of space wolves grey (and now with some space wolves grey blending), but I think the drybrushed effect is still too much visible...

I like the look but if you want to reduce the drybrushed effect you should do lots of washes over your tank or you can paint another thin layer of paint all over your tank but your it will only be one colour.

Thanks, I've also posted over on warseer and bolterandchainsword, but it seems I don't receive much response, sooo I assume not much people like my little army :-/ ;-) But well, if I could get some ideas to improve my work it would be great :) So I'm a bit upset, because I spend so much time on the LR and all minis ;-) And I really like to improve my skills (well it should be a very good table top standard where people say: look, this army is really nice ;-)). So I don't assume I'll ever post a golden demon entry or something like that, haha...

I will definately try to reduce the drybrushed look with 1:1 space wolves grey : shadow grey and on my other figures I will replace the bases with very little cliffs and a icy look I think... much like my inspiring example over here:

But honestly regarding my LR, I don't think that e.g.

http://coolminiornot.com/241229

is so much better... maybe I should add a little freehand something on the top? But I also wanted to add the rocket luncher and so on... hmmm, and I'm not a big fan of freehands (but I think I have to learn and practise it), except on banners, modeled (GS) and freehand banner are the best of the best ;-)

So do you have any tips to improve especially my LR further? :)

As a side note, I tried to achieve a look similar to this one (except the colors for sure) which is so great, even without any shading:

Well - usually I have not much to say about W40K stuff - not really my cup of tee :) But about your painting skills - I think those wolves looks impressive. Scored 9 on them :good:.
Sorry to not be able to give you any hints about how to improve, as your painting is far better than mine :) Just keep going - don't get upset and have a fun with paint :) Personally - every other piece finished is always a bit better than previous :)

Thanks, but I surely have to improve ;-)

Hmmm, I have some problems in thinned layers, more or less it ends with some kind of a wash, so I always add a lot of water to less paint and try to dry the brush with a kitchen towel, but then almost no paint is left, so I usually be careful with the kitchen towel and it ends up like a wash and I think a wash has similar effects like drybrushing (without seeing the strokes), but I'm not sure if my paint should be a bit more "dry" than a wash to add a thin layer? Or maybe more than one layer?

Your wolves are pretty nice. For your paint, you have different options, you can paint with paints that are diluted as much as washes or as glazes but it'll be very long and it's not really good if you want to paint a whole army, it's better if you want to paint minis for competitions or things like this. I advise you to dilute a little bit less than for a wash and then paint thin layers until you get the effect you want. If you don't arrive to dilute like that, don't worry, it'll come with experience. Washes don't give the same effect as drybrushing if you don't apply with sort of big wash stains (do you understand what I mean), you just have to apply them in thin layers. If you have time, you can improve by trying to paint single minis at the highest standard, with different techniques, as if they were for Golden Demon. You have to spend a lot of time on the mini, and, with time, you'll see that you'll improve after each mini. Here are two good videos (in French sorry) that may help you with dilution:

http://www.figurines-tv.com/kws/index.php?mod=telechargements&ac=fichier&id=23
These two are from amazing painters and on amazing minis but the principle is the same as for other minis.

After approximately 3 hours additional work:

Now I need to rework the battle damage a little bit and then paint the sponsons :)

And my newest terminator addition (need to work on the storm bolter) and I'll add some cliffs next time on the bases...

The tank looks much better after that recent improvement, its a lot less grainy, if you get me.

i like the termie very much, however the base is to similar and blends in to it loosing some of the effect of your painting (i am assuming it is finished as you said you will add cliffs next time?). if the base was changed i think it would add the miniature as a whole.

you could maybe try a colour that is different to the blue of the modal its self (long way round). Alternatively you could just add some snow flock or static grass, (or something to that effect) and i think it will be greatly improved!

Thanks, I'll try to achieve a look similar to the above posted grey hunter squad from Violet and I think her bases are not bad (simple and good so far), or does someone has better ideas? :) Especially for my upcoming Ragnar convertion I want to have a nice base (converted the mini which seems to look like wolverine, which is a great sculpture I think)... but I won't change the head... :)

But regarding the bases, I've no other ideas... and I dislike the current (old) ones which had a bleached bone / bubonic brown look with a bit of snow and grass, but well, nothing special
