Have to pass this along. First, a note to all you young\'ns - that rock-n-roll can SERIOUSLY damage your hearing. There was no such thing as loud enough for a long time for me when it came to music.

I\'ve known for quite a while that I have lost quite a bit of hearing but in the last year it has become a real hassle..........huh? what? or simply not hearing something AT ALL.

Well, a friend told me about a hearing aid place to go for a free test and while interested, I put it off for months knowing that I simply couldn\'t even come close to affording the actual hearing aid. Last monday I went and had the test and found that in some of the tone\'s I\'m almost deaf. I told them that I was no where near being able to pay for the gizmo\'s. Very cooly the lady looks at me and says that ocassionally they have a grant program and that I fit the profile. $6000 (yes, 3 zeros) hearing aid for free!! STUNNED! Only worn them for a few days. The world\'s not louder, it\'s crisper, more articulate. I have them in all day and quickly don\'t even notice the difference........................until I take them out. WOW, it\'s like turning the bass all the way up and the treble all the way down. Sound becomes very dull. Not quiet, just less intricate.

And having a deaf daughter I have come to respect what hearing loss entails.

Shawn, I grew up running my Dad\'s yellow iron (Cat equipment-large turbocharged diesels) and then shot lots of large caliber weapons.

Needless to say, much of my high frequency is gone. An aid won\'t bring any of it back. Implant technology might eventually be worthwile and afordable.

But it was a blast (bad pun?).

I sometimes think I\'ve lost some hearing from having to listen to people scream at me through headsets all day.. You\'ve inspired me to go get checked too. I can do it through my insurance. My family has a history of high range hearing loss but then they have a history of being sharp shooters too so that may explain it.

I have some family members who might get some use from this. I keep telling them not to be obnoxious, and they just don\'t seem to hear me.

I think there are many places that will do the test for free - sort of incentive to buy once you get the results.

I knew I had lost some hearing, but WOW, I was shocked at how much. In the higher tones, I was almost legally deaf!!

Heh. My grandfather had cataract surgery. He\'d been putting it off a long time, since he didn\'t \"need\" it. He was shocked afterwards that the sky was blue. He\'d just assumed that the world was getting dirtier and dirtier! Couldn\'t wait until the other eye was up for the same surgery!

Yes, but thata\'s because I\'m kind of a pacafist. Can\'t be bothered to shoot when I can just get up and walk out.

i know how you feel. my old man has been the same. he was brilliant when he got his new hearing aid! he seems to be regressing though!

im actually 3/4 deaf in my right ear. it all stems back to a hunting experience that i dont have enough time or inkling to type out.

but yeah i get ya on the hearing thing.

Yep hearing loss is a pain.
I\'ve between 10-15% hearing loss in one ear, due to Menieres syndrome. Couple that with lifelong Tinnitus and in some circumstances I can\'t hear a damn thing.
Heavily Air conditioned rooms with constant \"White Noise\" from fans and that\'s it, Deaf as the proverbial post.
Lead to a couple of \"Near Miss\" incidents with people who think it\'s funny to try to sneek up on me. Especially when I\'m relocating Server racks/rails and have a Large screwdriver in my hand.
(And a Rolling Shoulder/Hip-lock throw can be Heeee-larious on someone trying to be a right smart a*se).

My wife says I am going deaf all the time... I think.. if I heard her correctly.

Actually, a friend said his dad lost hearing in the range that matched his wife\'s voice when yelling at him. I heard her going at him when visiting once and it was pretty hard to ignore from the other side of the house, but this guy managed to do it.
