That is one nasty belly! :p I love the blending of the yellows, and it\'s nice to see yellow being used like this! Not may actually dare!

However... I would still have sculpted on the scales, but it does give him a cartoony look with them painted on :) And the painting is done great on the scales as well :D

Voted an 8 :D

this is cool, reminds me of something out of a Todd Mcfarlane comic. Yellows are done noce, and the scales look just fine painted to me, if they were sculpted would appear more like sections of turtle shell, whereas it looks like lizard patterning.

This guy is great! The cartoony style really works well. I give him a 9 for the blending of the yellows, and overall a clean, well-executed and characterful job. Nice work :]

The Heresies of Yellow.

Thank you to everyone for their positive comments ...

I think the big secret to painting yellow is... \"dont realise how much fear it holds over other painters before you start\".

Seriously. If you think you can\'t do it then you won\'t. But i believe that about most things.

I am happy to share recipies, but that might not help, as I exclusively use FOUNDRY PAINTS - because my wonderful wife bought me a complete set a year ago for my birthday! what a woman eh! and thats what got me back into painting!!!

So, from the link to foundry paints above, this figure was painted with only four tones.

Undercoated in a white spray.
Base coated with Yellow Shade 2a
Then highlighted/feathered up Yellow 2b
Then Light Yellow 2c
And with the extreme highlights picked out in Bonyard Light 9c (mixed with a little white)

Although only four tones, the skin probabaly has about 20 coats of paint on it. That seems to be the issue with yellow - its coverage! The basecoat took about 5 coats to get a smooth cover, and that was over a white undercoat. Each highlight is about the same... patience and then more patience and just when you think you are done a huge extra dollop of patience on the side...

Especially on the belly - having painted that in the base coat i then put about 10 coats of each lighter highlight on it before moving on to the next - nothing clever just thin paint and layers...
I am experimenting with different yellow shades and this one...

Was done with a black undercoat and then base coated in Lemon shade 1a and the highlighted up through Lemon 1b and 1c and then touched up with boneyard 9c and white as above.

Hey you know what - i\'ve never been asked for advice or a recipe on this site before... perhaps i am getting better after all :)

[big smug grin]

Thanks for the recipe. While I don\'t use Foundry paits, I am sure I can find something simalair.

As to painting yellow, I am really not that affraid of it, its just that it is so much work to get right. And then it seems that 9 times out of 10 its still not right.

Nice sign on the new growler. :D
