With all the tributes pouring in for George Best, the death of another of my heroes seems to be slipping by unnoticed...

Richard Burns, the only Englishman to win the World Rally Championship finally lost his battle with a brain tumour. He was only 34 and died on the fourth anniversary of his world title win.

Very sad.

I probably be beaten up for this

It always sad when someone dies.......

but

He brought it on himself, he was given a second chance with a new liver and wasted it, just cause he was famous. I can\'t feel sympathy for a man who took a life saving liver (that someone else could have had) and wasted it.

I feel more sorry for the poor bugger that might have lived if they\'d had that liver.

Like i said no -one likes anyone dying but when you prevent another from living just to waste the second chance you\'ve been given then..........no sympathy.

Change the fucking record.

The poor bastard suffered from an addiction - something that is now clinically recognised as a disease that you can be genetically predisposed to.

This sort of holier-than-thou attitude makes me want to puke. Many people make themselves ill through their lifestyle - smoking, eating, lack of exercise, hazardous or poor working and living environments. Would you refuse them treatment too? The guy paid his taxes like the rest of us and waited on the list like everyone else who needs an organ. That gives him as much right as the next person if you ask me.

It is generally accepted that patients with alcoholic liver disease are likely to develop disease in their new liver if they continue to abuse alcohol. Patients assessed by experienced psychiatrists as likely to continue to abuse alcohol are usually regarded as unsuitable for liver transplantation. I don\'t begrudge Best at having a second chance and it was sad he has an addiction. It\'s not just \"bleeding hearts\" though. Due to a shortage of organs doctors are forced to decide where a donor liver may be best used.

Sorry back on topic... very sad about Richard Burns especially as he was so young. Why did this go by without much notice? I didn\'t even see a news report ..

I am fully aware of the decisions that medical professionals face in these instances. Thankfully they can see past media hysteria.

Transplants are lost all the time, not just by addicts either. Many are lost by those who fail to continue to take their anti rejection drugs. Of course we hear nothing about this at all....

Then there is the fact that Afican Americans are twice as likely to reject their transplanted organ. You going to refuse them an organ too?

I have absolutely no doubt that Best was subjected to very close scrutiny before his transplant and it was decided that it was worth a go. By peope who know what they\'re talking about.

My point remains: If you start to pick and choose who to treat based on some dubious moral code, then we are on a very slippery ethical slope....

Bloody good footballer and bloody good car-driving chap. I didn\'t know anything about Burns\' problem until you mentioned it (not the being dead problem, the tumour). A bloody nice bloke he was.
