Starting out sculpting

Patience, practice, and patience.

Patience because your first armor, skin, vehicles, ... will never be as smooth as they could be.

Pratice because each putty reacts differently.

And patience again because you\'ll have to study what you want to sculpt before you sculpt it. Look up anatomy, weapons and vehicle designs, ...

what are you wanting to sculpt?
are you wanting to add details or scratchbuild a full figure?
what medium will you be using? Greenstuff? Milliput? Magic Sculpt?

main thing is know exactly what you want to achieve, and understand how the medium you use to sculpt behaves

GW has a good starting tutorial:

The \"articles\" area here has some good stuff too.

One thing I learned... lubricate your sculpting tool with water and not with Vaseline or similar. I can never seem to get all the lubricant off the putty and it\'s difficult to get the primer to stick if I don\'t use just water.

The most helpful advice I\'ve ever had is to keep everything very wet when sculpting with greenstuff. Keep a small bowl of water on your work table and constantly dip your tools and fingers in it to keep things wet, otherwise you\'ll be trying to sculpt with something about the same consistency as bubblegum.

Hope that helps.

personally, i lick my tools (fnar fnar) to keep them lubricated. as the guys said, learn how the putties react and bear in mind they behave differently at differnt stages of curing. practice a lot. break stuff down into basic shapes and work up from there. did i meantion practice?!! i have been pushing putty around for about 4 years now and only recently have i started to get stuff that looks close to what i want! just keep trying

know your tools know your mediums.....

A lot of sculpting is down to tool technique to start with.. the different mediums come into play as you develop and xpand your skills.

for simple cheap practise to get used to just pushing the clay around and creatig different shapes with your tool:redface: just use plasticin or fimo...that way you can just keep reusing it and don\'t waste money..also you can retest on the model over and over without wasting them either....

yeah, but not as good as kissing your own elbow, darkartistlol
Try small things first so you get the feel of the materail you\'re working with.Use armatures. Let the green-stuff harden.
Don\'t get frustrated.
