welcome to the boards:

Simple bases? Bit of glue (white or yellow wood or super glue) and some fine sand. Dark brown ink wash to give it some depth. Highlight with a bit of light tan drybrush.

cork / stone bases? try this:

Its a mix of glue(pva based i think) and pumice stone.

Although I buy it you can mix your own, for cheaper. just rub two pumice stones together and mix it with some glue.

The pummice gel (or silica gel) is a clear paint media with grit suspended in it. Golden and Liquitex both make versions.

I use a fine grit for producing the \'grass\' effect. You can use a coars silica gel and almost match the cork texture to fill in any missed areas.

Experience - do not add kitty litter to the mix to increase the coarsness. The kitty litter is a clay material and disolves in the gel.
