Storage

The only problem I keep having with all my painting is trying to find the right colour...
Having over 300 different paints stored in Games Workshop foam trays can be difficult and annoying to find everytime...

Is there a solution?

Is there a paint rack out there that will hold that many paint in a small enough size to fit on my desk???

please help?

Before I had the carousel rack, I had all my paints in plastic toolbox case with trays inside. I could hold about 27 paints on a row, and had at least 3 rows. But for 300, I'd be making a giant spice rack pretty much.

Yeah, don't have 300 paints :D

Seriously though, I think you'll have to build something or buy multiples of one of the existing paint racks if you want to accommodate that many and have them easily at hand.

But maybe the first thing to look at is how many paints you actually use on a single project or within a short time, like per week, and start from there. If it's just 10-20 of that 300 then a rack that can take that number is what you need at hand by the desk, the rest can be just stacked on a shelf/shelves nearby.

I use paint from many years ago, eg, amethyst Purple (metallic Purple from the 90's).
I generally have projects of armies of about 3000 points for Warhammer Fantasy, so i tend to use most the colours, i also have a good range of P3 and Forgeworld colours that I also find useful.
So any help I can find will be useful.
I have looked at the above sites, all good ideas.

If they were dropper bottles, I'd suggest simply turning them upside down. Do that with my cheap craft paints. But paint pots... not sure that'll be safe for the paints.

If the paint containers are not see-through (eg. eye droppers), you can put some paint on the top of the cap (or bottom) so you can see the colors better. But maybe paint a thin layer, so you have a better idea of what it will look on the model. I put mine on too thickly, and now all the blues pretty much look the same. :/

Thanx to all, I ended up getting a large Back 2 Basix one that covers the back of my desk, it goes up the wall rather then filling the space all over it, so it is nice..

After many years of just having them all filling a couple of shelves on a small book case, I recently invested very little in a more space-conscious solution.

For Reaper and Vallejo I have a largish clear plastic container I bought from an auto supplies store (SCA in Australasia). It has compartments, holds many paints upright and accessible, and can go under the bed or under the desk.

For P3 and oooold Citadel a number of stackable, clear lid, hard plastic containers (also from SCA). Being stackable they have a tiny desk footprint and it's easy enough to find what I'm after.

Cost close to nothing and is very tidy and user friendly.

There is still a huge number of CdA to figure out but that is the price we pay for collecting colours... yep, in a shoebox 2 deep lol

Some interesting ideas in this thread. I just started buying paints so I want to figure out how to organize them before things get out of hand!

Three ideas I've had include:

a) A spice-rack style shelf for the wall
b) A tiered stand (think a staircase) for the tabletop.
c) A wall-cabinet system; it would have shelves in both the main body of the cabinet and on the doors, effectively doubling the storage given the wall space. This could also keep out dust.

I've been really happy with the stuff from HobbyZone (ARBAL's post above) though that wall mounted rack is very interesting (and inexpensive). I'm using one of HZ's painting stations so I keep a smaller group of paints in that depending on what project I'm working on plus with some pretty common colors. The rest I have stored out of the way in the cabinet above my painting area. There are certainly cheaper solutions out there, as Zab pointed out. They just take a little more creativity.

^ Wow, I'm liking those HobbyZone storage dealies... especially that curved painting station. I think I may steal some of those ideas if I build my own :D

Found this in my blog roll yesterday. I am very excited since i am redoing my basement anyway the hobby room is getting an upgrade and I will totally be using this idea...

That's a really awesome idea! I think I may do that one too :D
