street acts

having read this thread, i was wondering what the best street acts you have ever watched were? also what do you think of buskers? personally i don\'t mind as long as they aren\'t in your face or disruptive

we have a few in cardiff that stick out for different reasons:
one is a scruffy old fella in a wheel chair who only seems to be able to slightly move his head and hands (god knows whats wrong with him, he looks like a drunk after a week on the piss). he has a dodgy little 2 octave mini keyboard that he presses one note on and then gurgles into the microphone. i assumed he was just doing it randomly but caught a bit of amazing grace tune the other day! he also sells tapes!

there a cool dude who attaches a rope between 2 trees and plays the violin while walking up and down it. he\'s pretty good

theres also an old dude who sings. he\'s become a bit of an icon as he is just some old fella with a very mediocre voice who sings into one of those children\'s microphones that make your voice seem echoey. always brings a smile to my face (despite that fact that people love him so much, he probably makes more than me!!)

the funniest i ever saw though was in portugal. it was one of those silent, statue acts. the fella was dressed up all posh and he was supposed to be the puppet master to the woman\'s puppet. she had a face like thunder anyway and i didn\'t like them. but a stray dog made my day by insisting on humping her leg! he face looked even more sour after that. cracked me right up

so, whats yours?

I thought the guy in Cardiff city centre with the kids microphone thing was terrible.

Best I have seen wasn\'t really busking as such but at IFOS (International Festival of the Sea) in Portsmouth a few years ago they had a Samba band going around, they were excellent and made even better by the lead guy who was a real character and very capable of holding the crowds with his antics lol at one stage we had to move them on because the crowds watching them became that big they were blocking the roads off.

Fantastic to watch though :D

What about those idiots with the guitars who charge into pubs, play Beatles medleys and then tap you up for cash? Those blokes get my goat...

Yep Bolton has a couple, One\'s a reasonable guitarist and singer.
The other, well shall we just say, can you remember the Bird song scene in Shrek?
Worse than that.

The oddest busker I have ever seen was in New York City. I was on vacation, and was just roaming around and doing the tourist thing.

In Central Park, I happened across a trio of men dressed in Klingon costumes, complete with prosthetic brow-ridges.

Performing Klingon opera.

I think the only thing that kept them from getting beaten up was that they had Klingon weapons that looked like they might have actually been functional, rather than decorative.

:D Our Balboa Park has lots of street type acts....what started out as single musicians practicing in quiet corners of the park has grown and many are quite good. Keeps the tourists happy lol

Personally I love Buskers, as noted before, as long as they don\'t get too in your face.

Me and a few friends used to Busk out in front of the downtown coffee shop. I did Devil Sticks, one friend had a Diabolus and the other did traditional juggling (pins, knives, balls etc). Never made much but it always payed for our coffee and gave us something to do on a Friday night.

Locally they have a Busker\'s Festival each year, where Buskers from all around get to set up shop down by the riverfront. There are scheduled events on two stages as well as a ton of impromptu \'events\' going on. Local restaraunts get booths and the local breweries and wineries are usually there as well. It\'s a great time.

The best busking I have ever seen though was in the Pedestrian Market in Ottawa. Most of the acts there were high end and very professional with the acts showing up and setting up wiring, mics, amps and all sorts of equipment before putting on their shows. They would get hundreds of people watching each one. I would have to guess they made pretty good money at it as well.

This fella: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7vHbcQH_H0&feature=related he really puts his heart into it, and sometimes he has a drum. Hangs out outside Fenwicks.

Also Tony the Tramp, uses Laura\'s works back door as his toilet and has became a bit of a local legend. (Along with Bag Lady)
