Today I woke to find that the New York city Transit have finnally gone on strike. For anyone not following this story, this means today and untill further notice all NYC buses and subway trains are not running! Looks like for today at least I\'m home. I guess ill do some painting and make the best of it.:(

I can hear the old men already, muttering through their moustaches, \"In my day, we had to walk 100 miles, barefoot through blizzards to work or there\'d be no food on the table\". As they drink their pints, things get steadily worse and enter the Monty Python skit. (It was Monty Python, wasn\'t it?)

Is that including all the ferries as well?

If so then it makes Modderrhu\' post pointless :D

Besides I know how much most Americans hate walking from one block to another:D

Plus having walked most of Manhatten Island in a day when I was there in June my feet were glad of the subway back to the Statten Island ferry and a sit down :D

Given the average person will walk at a pace of around 3 miles an hour I think I would stay home as well if I had to walk to work and it took that long each time :D

Hey! At least you have a plan to make productive use of your time, shinjikun1 :D I don\'t admire anyone who has to try to get around NYC at the moment.

And if you keep up with the news..... a judge has ruled that the Transport Workers Union is in contempt of court for stiking and is charging them $1M per day for the strike. Seems they had already been told the strike would be illegal, but they did it anyway.

Score one for the non-union people!! Not right placing other people\'s livelihood (or lives in some cases) in danger.

eh? how does that work? weird...

Sorry, but the mind boggles that you can have legal and illegal strikes, if they are legal then doesn;t that imply that they are in the right and their bosses are thus in the wrong and thus should give into the demands?

I must have strikes all wrong, because I thought they happened when the workers had been screwed over to such a point they said enough is enough and quit working until something is done to improve things, the concept that this can be illegal is just... well, wrong.

@Trevor we have that in Oz as well. Certain places cannot go on strike like power workers etc. But hey if the Yanks can sue someone they\'ll find a way to do it.

From what I understand, the two biggest bones of contention are the Union wants an 18% raise in pay, and does not want to let Management raise the age of retirement for NEW EMPLOYEES to 62 instead of 55.

At least thats what we\'ve heard over here.

@Trevor - The legality or illegality of strikes has nothing to do with who is right and who\'s wrong. Certain industries are not legally allowed to strike because they are deemed to be \"essential services\". In other words, if they failed to do their job it would seriously jeapordize the health/safety/security of the public. Strikes also have little to do with who\'s being \"screwed\" or not. It\'s a negotiating tool. When your contract runs out, if the company or industry isn\'t willing to give you what you want, you have the option (in most cases) of going on strike. Just because you go out on strike doesn\'t mean that what you are asking for is reasonable.

As for this particular case, I know very little of the specifics of teh union demands or what the city is offering, so I won\'t comment directly.
