Stupid Computer

Hmm, the fact he quickly shut the computer off leads me to believe he wasn\'t looking at Gaia, unless that happens to be the young lady\'s name. ;)

I\'m not a techie so I can\'t help my Lizzie out with this, sorry.

Pity I don\'t live in California.
That\'s sounding like a \"20 minute\" fix for a hands on techie.
(20 minutes to look at the PC, 20 minutes for a Cuppa and 20 minutes to Fix it)

As has been suggested the PS2 keyboard on most older machines (3-4 years) are generally in the Bios, can\'t always guarentee the same with the USB. If you have a PS2 keyboard try swapping it and rebooting it. If it gives a \"BEEP\" when you are firing it up then the Bios is trying to work.
Hopefully he hasn\'t crashed the HDD , so you should get an option to do a disc check ....Allow it to run.
Then you should be able to get running.

After that:------- Apply Flat of hand to rear of Offsprings Head at speed.

The error message you\'re getting is a standard OS message for an improper shutdown, it will want you to run scandisk. chances are it\'ll all come back once you can sort the keyboard

First thing to check is that the keyboard is plugged in properly. with the pc switched off pull the connector out and reseat it.
It doesn\'t matter if the keyboard has a USB connector (flat, rectangular) or a PS2 connector (small circular and usually purple these days) the PC will contain drivers for both.

if that doesn\'t fix the problem then as shadzar suggested, check for lights on your keyboard. Try hitting numlock or ctrl-alt-del during boot to check it will do something.

Ok so here\'s the latest on my computer. the problem with it is............

wait for it.........................

Dust! The thing is choked with dust even though I blowit out every month because of some dust storms we\'ve had lately. My mother board is fried and my video card is suspect as well. The poor guy at Rent a Geek was loaded down with work because EVERYONE\'s computer is messed up. He has no boards in stock and it will be at least a week, probably longer because of money.

So the question is if I\'m going to buy a new mother board, proccessor and vid card would it just be cheaper to buy a new computer (I don\'t have Vista but my comp is only 1 year old)

When my PC died a few weeks ago I found it was going to be a hell of a lot cheaper to just replace the components that had failed. Unfortunately as it was an old Dell system I ended up having to replace quite a bit more than I\'d planned to get it all to work with the new non-Dell motherboard. All in all chip, motherboard, ram, case, powerplant and HDD still ended up costing me a fraction of the price of a new pre-built system. If you know how to fit it yourself it is certainly a better option to go with components.

If you are getting a new HDD make sure you have an install disk for your opperating system or you\'ll need one of them too.

first thing to do is get him to explain what is fried on the motherboard and why the video card is suspect.
A blown capacitor on the motherboard could cause your keyboard problems, but if you\'re getting display I would say your video card is fine.

Also, if your PC is about a year old, you shouldn\'t need a new processor.

it\'s also worth comparing prices of getting them/him to source and fit part(s) and sourcing them yourself and getting them to fit the part(s).

I do IT support in a hospital, you wouldn\'t believe the amount of stuff my desktop guys have to hoover out of PC\'s sometimes. But they keep on going.
