Stupid Observations

Dude ... I\'m already tired of space marines!!

Seems everyone beat you to it ... trooper after trooper ... the hero/command figs are fine in any quantity but trooper after trooper gets old fast.

I usually try to paint up a group of 3 similar figs and post them w/ a front & back shot and leave it at that. Gives everyone a good idea of what I\'m doing, but doesn\'t make them sift through tons of very similar pics.

Here here! I totally agree with you Nadin! This place is a great resource for checking out minis, seeing other peoples work, and perhaps seeing that model painted you haven\'t been able to find on the net anywhere! (i.e. the new warlord line from Reaper.) I remember when I started painting more seriously, and the only place I could find examples of what I was looking for was on EBAY. But now, you can come here, use the search function, and *poof!* many examples of the same mini. So, to h-e-double toothpicks with the scores, the comments are what really matters.

As a side note, Abe Lincoln once said..\"You can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but never all of the people all of the time\" (rough guess, but thats the gist) or in other words, no 9.5 average score minis for me! :D

WHOAH! SLOW DOWN!

Hey all, I believe it even says in the web page that this is a \"fun\" site to post pics of minis. First off, ratings should be loosly interpreted at best. if you know it\'s good, it\'s good. Most people post on here to get their work looked at. some of it is because they think it can get better, and to recieve comments and suggestions. some people do it to compare against others. some for inspiration. Why does it matter if your score is low? The good guys out there will post comments and help you, even if the vote creeps give you 1\'s for SAG it shouldn\'t matter. Want to strike back against the low voters? Post comments. give em a low vote if you want but show some courtesy and explain why, then make suggestions to improve. Think it\'s a great mini? Stroke some egos. Those poor guys out there getting the 3\'s and 4\'s are where we all once were. Just starting out. don\'t reduce the population of future painters by shooting them down in flames. Art is a funny school. always someone better, always someone worse. Me? Hell, I do it for fun. I give the stuff away after I paint them. No Ebay auctions, no selling. I buy figs that look like fun for the hobby, then I find them a good home.

Dudes and Dudettes

Ha Ha! What have I , the chosen Son of Arioch himself started??? I believe we have some nice debates going on now. Anyways, though my initial complaint (if that\'s what you *really* want to call it) may have become somwhat garbled, my actual point was that I don\'t care about the scores. It was just the damn horse that took me by surprise. Anyways, I have read with anticipation the thread every day, and I have seen a lot of names I don\'t know respond and a lot of people I respect as well. Craig, I totally agree about the browsing for examples. When I started messing with NMM the best place to look was here, especially Ramon\'s stuff. Jim, Badaab, I couldn\'t agree more. I mean, I could post at least a dozen High elf spearmen if you like :). Nadin and the rest, It is a wonderful place to show your work. Rage, it is a beef but it is not so important. People will always be that way. Man is destined to be doomed so something as simple as honest voting on artwork is not likely to happen until there is but one man (or woman) left on earth! Anyways, forget about the HORSE! Screw it. I am over it. Look for some new stuff early next week hopefully, that I can share with you all :)

You know what? The miniature scores seem to actually be quite stable. I recently reposted a handful of my old miniatures with better pictures (look up my last few for a visual aide) :

Vor Growler - old 5.7 with 384 votes - new 5.7 with 18 votes.
Quimby Copperthumb - old 6.9 with 204 votes - new 6.9 with 26 votes
Chainmail Ghouls - old 5.6 with 173 votes - new 6.1 with 17 votes
Eli Quicknight - old 5.5 with 166 votes - new 5.9 with 17 votes
Osyluth - old 5.3 with 166 votes - new 5.2 with 21 votes
Bone Constructs - old 5.5 with 174 votes - new 6.3 with 19 votes.

In many cases, the scores are EXACTLY the same. In the other cases, the scores are slightly higher, most likely due to the better photograph - the only change between the shots.

I think in most cases, it actually works. The coolminiornot scores seem to be pretty reproducable. Are they the end all of what is cool? I don\'t know. I think my recent VOID Grav Bike (#8285) is a cool miniature after having it sit on an antenna, but I don\'t think it\'s my best painted miniature. But it\'s cool! And others think it\'s cool, which is where the scores come from.

I guess my point is that the scores aren\'t as bad as you\'re all claiming them to be. But in some cases it\'s like comparing apples to oranges. (Phillipe\'s large scale miniatures come to mind. Beautiful, but in some ways it\'s a different artform.) I suspect that scores between identical sculptures will generally show which is a better miniature.

Just to fan the flames. ;)

Here\'s my 10 cents (my 2 cents is free...heheh, go EMINEM)

CMON certainly has it\'s uses...it really just depends on what YOU wnat to get out of it.

For example, I tend to use it to get exposure for mini\'s I\'m selling and to spot trends in what people think is neat.

I do not place any stock in the ratings my stuff gets here, unless that rating is in a comment from someone whose opinion I value (or just someone who makes a good point). What I mean is, a comment from the Gaijin or Zaphod has a helluva lot more value to me than a composite score gleaned from Monkeynutz and BitchinPainterDood.

As for what people post....I don\'t sweat it much....I rate it as I would anything else (taking into account what I know about painting in different scales, ie. it\'s a lot easier to pull off something painted mainly black in 120mm scale than it is in 25mm).

If I really want critiques I go to Mini-Painter...and I\'m heading over to tech-lords right now to see what the H.... the Gaijin is talkin bout.

Peace.

I just wanted to refute my previous post. My ratings are pretty fair; sometimes it is hard to see the flaws in one\'s own work. I certainly have alot to learn about painting, and this will be a good way to at least have some fun posting my work while learning. If nothing else, you will all get to see plenty of old miniatures you may not have seen before (whether that is a good thing or not I leave for you to decide...)

Go for it!

Kev if you don\'t worry about the ratings, go for it and post away! I have no qualms and if I ever get caught up, I might just leave some comments for you!

I will admit that I do tend to look at the rating for at least one purpose. It\'s hard to see what some things are in the thumbnail so short of looking at every post I will look at the 6.5-10 rated stuff before I look at a 3.6. I mean I\'d rather look at stuff that\'s better than mine because I alrady know what a bad paint job looks like. But real ratings...This is Cool miniature PICTURE or not. One of my figures recently slightly edged out one of the top ten painters figures in a regional painting competition. But I can guarantee you that the photograph I\'d take with my cheap digital camera would net me a rating significantly lower than theirs. It\'s just the way it is. And that\'s why I look at stuff in the range of ratings I look at. There are some really nice paint schemes out there that don\'t get rated higher because the picture is hurting them. If the picture isn\'t picking up any of the hilighting and shading how can a reviewer do anything but rate you lower?
