The July issue of Railroad Model Craftsman has a great article on making plasticard look like real wood siding.

sand with coarse sandpaper with the grain to enhanse the grain of the \"wood\".

Kilz2 primer

Rit liquid fabric dye is washed on.

Then a bit of raw sienna drawing ink along the top where the wood would not have aged due to the eave.

Use a sawblade, sideways and a good wire brush. Another way to do it.
