Sub-division of Terrain Category - good idea or not?

Just a little \"straw poll\" to see what others think about some issues with the \"Terrain\" category:

Would it be worthwhile to sub-divide the Terrain Category into more appropriate sections and thereby allow Scenery (buildings and structures that sit on the Terrain) to be distinguished from Terrain (the stuff you put the scenery on).

Additionally, and separately, would a division of the Terrain Category be worthwhile to distinguish between \"large\" items, such as full table or complete display pieces, against \"small\" pieces such as individual buildings, ruins and other small \"stand alone\" items.

Obviously CMON is not \"Cool Terrain or Not\" but I feel that the current lumping together of all terrain and scenery irrespective of size does not reflect the submissions in the category very well.

Very few people will ever be able to submit a full table or a large professional display piece and their inclusion in the general Terrain category pushes some excellent smaller work down the scale.

In addition it is often practically difficult to rate a table or large display piece accurately, or appropriately, due to the submitted image size and when combined with how the piece itself \"has\" to be shown in overview: in effect almost none of the large displays or tables show anything like the detail that is shown on smaller pieces, they are all long/wide shots: They may look great at a distance and actually be very disappointing when seen up close in detail. (This is actually quite common).

There is, clearly to me, also a tendency for people to vote comparatively i.e. if a giant table display is worth a 9 then how can anything else other than a giant table display every be worth a 9?
Going through the Terrain category it appears to me that the two above issue combine to present a rather unflattering result: that of smaller pieces being automatically worth lower scores simply because they are smaller: it would be a bit like saying a 28mm figure can never be worth a higher score than a 54mm figure: - *because* the 54mm got a 9, therefore no 28mm can ever be worth more than 8 as it is smaller….

Clearly such an approach to scoring is nonsense… but it appears that this may be what happens when people score the “Terrain” category.

If people want to consider what I mean then I invite them to look at some of the highest scored large terrain pieces: note that it is invariably impossible to see any detail, weathering, quality of seems joins, micro-detail and up-close paintwork; often none can be seen. Yet on a single small piece we can critique it down to the tiniest detail just as we do with figures because we are shown that sort of detail on the images.

Ironically where submitters of large pieces do post multiple images (in order to show detail and give a good all-round impression of quality) they are often criticised: one poster marking the excellent LotR Black Gate down to a low score simply because the submitter had posted more than one image of the model.
Now I do think that the majority of the large submission DO look like they are worth the scores they have been given. At the same time I have also seen a growing percentage of really rather average models getting ‘good’ scores “just because they are big”. It’s a bit like giving a 400-figure 40K army a score of 9 just because there are lots of figures (and none of which you can see in any proper detail).
IF the category was divided though we could imagine that large submissions are expected to submit multiple images of the same model so that we CAN see the detail (and not have people mark them down FOR submitting multiple images).

Anyway…

In summary I would like to say that I am not saying “the system is broke” – obviously it works to some large degree and I am thankful that CMON is here and even has a Terrain category at all!

At the same time I do think that some sort of sub-division of the category would be useful and, having given my opinion, would like to hear what others think.

I agree to a certain extent that maybe buildings etc should be separated from terrain itself, but I think it would be extremely difficult to implement. Not to populate the drop down as such, but what about the 1000\'s of entries that are already on the site? Either they will be in the wrong category or someone will have to spend hours sifting through and changing the category.

I had suggested something similar to add a conversions category, but I can\'t see either of them being implemented in the near future.

As to the voting styles, I think there are a number of different ways of voting, but I don\'t think the style you have defined is that common. People here actually look more for the details than a very vague overall view. I am aware that some people do leave silly comments and silly votes on submissions regarding numbers of pictures etc, but they are a minority really.

On the subject of conversions....

Is it strictly needed? After all a space marine is still a space marine even if I alter the pose, rasie his leg and give him different arms. Also, at what point is a conversion actually a conversion? Is one arm swap considered enough?

Maybe what could be done is to have a checkbox when the image is addded to the gallery that you check if you have done any remoddeling work done on it. That way, space amrines are still in the space marine category, but you could still search for spacxe marines that have been converted.

Just my two cents.... id like them back if possible, thats all the beer money I have left for the week!

The terrain idea is good, as is the conversion checkbox. I saw a mini once that looked for all the world like a plain unpainted mini and the guy didn\'t leave any description. I left the comment \"what are we supposed to be voting on\"? and gave him a 1 (in comment only, no vote). He PM\'d me and was VERY upset. Turns out it was a major conversion that he did all by FILING, no greenstuff, and he spoke almost no English, hence no description. I took another look at it, compared it to the original model, and voted. Up untill then I figured if someone didn\'t leave a description, screw-em! So a checkbox or something would help. I think another good feature would be to NOT let a person post a mini unless they NAME it! If I see just one more \"Another Mini\" I\'m gonna scream! I would also like to see some more companies added to the list of manufacturers, I hate having to choose \"other\". One last thing I would like to see is for the GW category to be split (SF and fantasy). I can chose SF or Fantasy, OR chose GW, but not both. Let us pick manufacturer AND genre. I like a lot of the WH stuff, but I HATE most of the 40K stuff. I know that will never happen, but this is just a wish list. :)

MarkusTay,

You can select a manufacturer and a category already when you post a picture. Categories are fantasy, sci fi historical etc.

I\'m talking about when your browsing the gallery; you can choose EITHER genre OR manufacturer, but not both. Maybe it\'s just me, but I only like to look at the Warhammer fantasy stuff. the 40K leaves me cold.

Markus,

Maybe I\'m misunderstanding here, but do you meen the browse gallery link with all the dropdowns? If so, you can select from mulitple drop downs to filter as much as you like. So you could have Fantasy Games Workshop by Fizl (It would only bring back one, but you get the gist!)

I\'m gonna try that right now...

hmmmm....

That\'s the fastest any woman\'s fulfilled my wishes, thanks Shaz! :D

(Now boy do I feel stupid...)

Thanks for the thoughts on terrain man. I am feeling ya there as a fellow terrainer. I have had people tell me the only way to crack the 9 mark is to do a massive town or do a table up. It does seem to be the way. And, as my stuff disappears as fast as its built- no extra pieces to build anything on that scale.
Unless someone commisions one...hint,hint.lol
Remember- if one piece takes a week- a table will take oh say- 6 months. So far- I\'ll stick with the 8\'s- but, its hardly fair and like apples to oranges. I think that this has come up before. You present some good food for thought. Tis tough around here, I\'m frankly better at posting these days;)lol

How \'bout a seperate site? Cool Terrain or Not? Don\'t know how many hits it\'ll get... :D

\"Cool Terrain or Not\" - not a bad idea. and the domain is available! Shame I\'m not a programmer or i\'d do it - i have the bandwidth.

I don\'t think too many people stop to consider the difference between a huge piece on here and a single object of \"terrain\"- if they did most of the current top 30 wouldn\'t be there as you can\'t see didly of the detail.

And, of course, most people have never even seen good terrain in person - ever.

I think that you chcukle at the idea of a \"CTON\" emphasises the point and the problem quite clearly; the hobby is full of bad terrain that nobody considers worthwhile even looking at (Rather, that\'s the assumption, it certainly isn\'t the reality at the top end of the market.) ... and they only stop to consider huge pieces which show little detail and think \"Wow! Bet that took some time\" - when often it hasn\'t. Detail takes time - not coverage.

So if its \"small\" it\'s, apparently, not that good. Maybe we should go through all the minis and score verything of 28mm down to a 5? Silly isn\'t it?

Well, best we can do is plant a seed and hope...

As Mr Dibbley says \"You never know!\"lol

P
Too true- most people are used to crappy terrain or no terrain. Spoils the game for me these days:]
beats me why you\'d spend all that time on minis and put them on a green sheet with a tree on itlol

If someone does make CTON- I\'ll be the first guy there baby:cool::D
hillocks will fill the goblin archer niche;)

Edit- hey Ant- drop a a link to your gallery- your stuff is wild!!!
