Suggestions for a web dev project

As some of you know, I'm a web developer/designer by trade. Most years I tend to undertake some project or other, generally to keep the brain ticking and ensure that I'm keeping up with the latest trends etc which I don't tend to have the time to do at work, also if it can make a couple of quid then so much the better. I'm starting to do more modelling/painting in my office area, but know that the other half intends to do some painting too, which means we'll be alternating between using the computer & painting desks. Rather than mindlessly wasting time on the internet, I'd rather have a proper project to mess with.

I'm at a loss of what to do though. I've not got any ideas running round my head and keep coming a blank. Previous years projects have included simple web games, card sorter for the Horus Heresy CCG, a PHP framework with CMS (which I now use at work) and a few customer websites. Last year I didn't do any project as I had loads to do in the house and spent a lot of time travelling to visit the girlfriend (who has now moved in).

Any ideas?

Anyway, I know it was suggested in a previous thread, but some sort of CMON app for mobile phones. My first thought would be some sort of voting app that's more optimized for the smaller screens.

That would be pretty cool, my biggest concern with any mobile based app is testing it - there being such a multitude of different platforms out there. Plus I'm sure that somebody here has a project just like that up their sleeve!

I've almost decided on a project now, it's likely to be "bitz" related, but need to check out some legal stuff before I plough on full steam ahead Will likely post my progress here once/if it gets underway

How about a new template for a gallery? I haven't found a good, easy and nice looking gallery with nesting options. If you made up something nice it could probably be used by a lot of different people when building their sites.

How about a macro photography effect app it won't be as good as an all singing all dancing dslr with macro lens but could still be popular
