Suggestions for painting of bases?

I have mainly seen the AQ bases painted in stone tiles similar to the stones of the game tiles, but wondered what other suggestions the forum might have for these bases. Textured bases require the removal and most likely the re-pinning of the figures to the base.

Rebasing wasn't so hard. I used snips to cut the current integrated base off in such a way to leave a peg on the bottom of the foot. Then on the new bases, I drill a hole, add some Green stuff and superglue and shove the peg in. Between the peg, the other foot getting glued and the bendy material, it has been super durable. It is how I have been attaching slotted minis to resin bases for years, never had a problem.

I have been using green stuff and carving out cobblestone outlines. This has been pretty easy. It's best to do it before undercoating the models. Then I use a bleached bone colour and cover the whole base, then a wash like GW nuln oil, then apply the colours.

Ritbit - This was my initial inclination as well, but I'm not fond of the idea of doing these cobblestones for all of these figures. I saw some clear acrylic bases ( http://hobbytimeblog.blogspot.fr/ )that looked pretty sweet, but the steps I have taken to magnetize my bases make this less attractive. Oh well, time to get out the greenstuff.
