Summer solstice...

Greetings and good summer solstice!

How do you all observe the year\'s longest day?

In Denmark, midsummer eve is called Saint Hans Eve, Saint Hans is the Danish name for John (Johannes) the Baptist. Traditionally, a bonfire atop of which a witch figure is placed is lit at dusk. The Danes say that they \"send the witch to Bloksbjerg\", a town somewhere in Germany.

(Before anybody gets up in arms about witch burning, the custom started in the middle of the 1800\'s, long after witch-burning ceased in the country)

Tonight we go to the house of some friends, eat dinner together, then walk to the beach on the Bay of Køge (south of Copenhagen) to watch all the bonfires be lit all around the bay. The weather is perfect for it, too.

How is Mid-summer Eve observed where you all are?:)

Well, it\'s not really a holiday in the USA. Of course I usually go out to dinner, and sometimes I have cake, but that\'s more because today is my birthday than due to the solstace.

We usually celebrate Christmas a couple of days after the summer solstice. ;) That\'s plenty enough celebration, me thinks. :) The winter solstice passes like any other day, other than the official start of winter.

I usually start it off by saying \'Happy Birthday\' to my wife, and go from there.
Alright, you two, is there something you\'re not telling us? ;) Happy birthday, vince! :)

It\'s not nice to stand up an egg. That egg probably spent hours picking out the right dress and doing its makeup. You should at least have had the heart to call and cancel.

My wife talks fondly her childhood Christmasses on the beach in Peru. Some day I\'ll see a white christmas and some day a blue one.

Having been bombarded with the romantic imagery of a white Christmas, it\'s something that I\'d love to see. When you get to enjoy your blue Christmas, vince, leave the turkey, the pudding, the gammon and all that behind. The feast is too hot and too huge for a hot Christmas day. Definitely a pina colada by the pool or beach type of day. :)

Ok, Isn\'t the Summer Solstice the 21st of June?

Anyhow couldn\'t celebrate it, I was working. Still raised a glass in it\'s honour though! ;)

In Sweden it\'s called Midsommarafton and we usually celebrate by drinking lots of alcohol and dancing around a giant pole pretending to be frogs.

It was the 21st this year, other years it might be the 22nd or 23... it vairies from year to year.

I personally spent the Summer Solstice at a Pagan/Wiccan wedding. It was an outdoor wedding that took place under 3 willow trees that formed a canopy overhead. The place was filled with magic.

Gotta admit though the beer part sounds fine. Hopping around like frogs...maybe not so much. :D

More than enough folks over here who observe the solstice. I think the community parade over in Freemont usually falls around that time. If nothing else, we usually have a BBQ or something since my friend\'s birthday is nearby on the 17th, I think.

Most years I spend the solstice working during the day and going a theatre workshop at night. :)
