Surprise present!

Well, I\'ve just come back from a friends hows having celebrated new year with him and his family. He had been going through his attic, and decided to ask me if I wanted any of the stuff he was going to get rid of. Then he showed me what it was......the Citadel colour paint set, creature paint set and monster paint set! Those old boxes with the paints in the round flip top pots! Some of them haven\'t even been opened, I feel like I have won the lottery!

Just thought I would share that with you all,

Lucky old you...

Those old Citadel paints are excellent. I have a load that are still perfectly serviceable. Those flip-top pots were light years better than the screw ones. I have seen untouched boxed sets sell quite well on eBay.

I have a load of these as well and despite some of them being in a part used state for over six years without being touched they are still very much usable, more so than some of the newer ones in fact.

Incidently Foundry paints are in the old style pots but with differrrent names not sure what they are like to use though.

I\'ve actually already got the Vallejo game colour set, but they were a nice gift. If anyone would like any of the colours etc. PM me.

my all time favorite paint...

I have these sets, and still use the paints in them occasionally. It is amazing how they have held up for 15+ years.

I also had the \"expert\" ink set.

Why couldn\'t they have stuck with those bottles?

No no no!I can\'t stand those bottles! Sure, they keep the paint fresh, but they\'re a bugger to open. Almost every time I open them I spill all over without fail.

They\'re a bugger to open? What do you do, glue them shut? All I can say is that our hands must be very different, because I find those flip-top pots a breeze, but have ditched my entire screw-top GW collection in utter frustration at their ability to exclude painter but admit air.

I can never really get my nails under the lid to open it, and when I do, it opens too fast when I\'m not expecting it, pouring paint all over. I found the screw top ones easier to open (even though they dried up) as because of its shape, I could put it in the vice and it was a breeze. The new ones are my favorites so far though.

...but even better for snipping! I have to ad metal to my brushes an penicils or else I snap \'em in half. Does make removing minis from the sprue faster though...

Well poo on you. I think they\'re a great idea! they\'re called widgets, and they do a good job of not letting the beer pour too fast so you get a nice amount of head on your pint. :moon:

Confound it! I even went and researched it! Well, I guess my only way I\'ll blend in with this culture is to don my beer gut outfit and use beer smelling breath freshener

Why I like Guinness

Other than a) I love beer b) I love Guinness more than any other beer and c) I love a beer while painting.... (and some will find this gross) I find that if I keep some beer in my mouth I use it to do the \"final clean\" on my brushes. I use a main rinse in one particular cannister of water, a mild wash of \"Walter Gold Matrix\", then a dip in a clean container of water, then the final \"wash\". They are cleaner than ever before and they keep a great point.

Gross I know. But it works.

I am, however, afraid to use it on my new Kolinsky Sable 00 and 000.

I\'ve got some Foundry paints and use \'em. There no different then Citadel paints except for the colour range, which has some more useful colours. I\'ve also still got a huge amount of the fliptop Citadels. Store \'em upside down and they last forever, plus makes shaking the bottles a little quicker.

@Dennismech: To open your flip tops make sure that the top is under your palm and use your fingertips to pry in an upwards direction tipping the palm down, slightly, whilst holding the bottle with your other hand. (Sort of like a seesaw motion) You have got to make sure that the \'hinge\' side is towards the wrist for ease. Once you get the hang of this:- no more spilled paint. (Yeah right!)
As a bonus it does improve the strength in your fingers as well!

@JimG: As for the Guinness what a waist to clean your brushes with it. (pun intended)

haha!! The trick with those flip tops is to use a bog-standard beerbottle opener, works a charm, and covering your hands with your favorite colour is a thing of the past.... Happy new year btw

Good to see you back from your trip Tammy. Now update minigrrrl! Now I have to go hunt out an amusing beer opener thing, preferable one that spouts amusing beer-related comments when used!

I have one of those old bottles (mithril silver) and I opened it by holding in one fist and pushing up with the thumb of same fist on the edge opposite the \"hinge\". Never spilled any.
My problem with them is same as my prob with any plastic \"hinge\". Use causes it to wear out. My lid broke long ago.
What I really liked about the lids was the sort of spout like thingy inside that kept the paint from getting on the rim of the bottle when you opened it. Course I\'ve now transfered all my paints to dropper bottles.
