More T.G.I.S.

I was thinking about the whole age issue and it occurred to me that I started playing D&D (the original mini-books) in 1979 when I was living in Eugene, Oregon then brought the hobby back to Edmonton when I moved back. I guess if this sort of thing existed 10 years earlier there may be some 50-year-olds on the list.

Does this make all the guys on here that are my age the \"pioneers\" of the hobby?

I hope I continue to improve because I paint better now than I ever have before.... Who knows by 50 I may actually be able to win something.

Finally - SHROUD - I was given the Ephrael Stern model by a member of CMON that I completed a trade with. An Excellent chap that is in GD Baltimore as we speak. Here is the deal. You have a look at some of my stuff and tell me if I am ready for Toronto GD (since I am setting up a visit) and you can hold her for a minute. hee hee.

First Post!!!

I have been looking at CMON for about a year and this thread has finally got me to sign on.

Sorry Finn I beat you by years!

I started painting figures way back in the 60\'s when I was in my early teens and last March I turned 53
I started with the old Airfix HO (?) scale soldiers, moved on to their 54mm offerings then discovered Historex and other metalic figures.
Lost interest for a few years then discovered 40k 13 years ago.

will start posting pics when technology allows

cheers!

too much to do, too little time...

tick tock, tick tock...ahem...i\'m turning 32 but feel like 23! :D

well, it definitely does feel good to know that there are others who are still into this hobby yet older than me (finn,...lol)

somehow, whenever i am in this forum, reading from people with likewise thinking/passion in this wonderful (at times disastrous) hobby, it feels like home.

friends my age are, IMHO, too anxious to grow \"old\"...no prize for guessing that they were utterly shocked to know that i take my fancy in these little guys/gals/monsters (although its okie to take my fancies in babes...). They will look at me with that quizzled and disbelief expression and question my sanity of spending $$ and time on it.

especially in office. sometimes some colleagues will look at me and these minis, shaking their head thinking that i must be crazy or need to get a life.

well, here\'s my other home.

Oh well [sigh]. I thought I was going to get to be the eldest at 49, but Nomis has me beat by 4. Welcome, Nomis.

by-the-by, I have three children, but they live in Texas [sing here: \"A-a-a-a-l-l-l-l-l my ex\'s live in Texas\"] and it was one of them that got me hooked on this crazy hobby. Though I have years of painting experience in other areas, he (at 15) remains a far superior mini painter than I.

Anyone older out there, Dragonsreach, I am looking at you?? \"So, I am still the biggest coffin-dodger here?\"
Ok Who\'s been talking. Own up, just cos the next big birthday I\'m looking at is my first half century. (2.5 years away)
As for dodging coffins, the old man with the scythe & hourglass has had a couple of swings at me, but I\'m still here (and can go out in sunlight).
As for eyes still working after 40 yes they do, just not as closely as they used to without help. (reading Glasses & Magnifiers help)
I totaly agree with the turning up into GW in a suit, throws those who don\'t know me right for a loop.
And PS my wife say\'s she is going to turn into a pineapple when I get all my miniatures painted. (Well she\'s safe there then!) {she\'s actually sat at my shoulder as I\'m typing this}
Ok then you cheeky lot I\'m off to unhitch my zimmer frame and put my teeth in to soak.
lol

I just turned 35 a week ago.

I often wonder to myself (and sometimes to my wife) whether or not all this \'mini\' stuff is a little silly for a grown man.

Now, let me clarify, I am quite obsessed with this hobby and most of its aspects. BUT we have a completely normal, productive life. I have two wonderful little girls, and we are actively involved with family and friends.
In fact, sadly, I don\'t even know anyone (in real life) who paints minis. (that is why I love this community so).

So then we both agree that \"yes\" it is a little silly for a grown man to partake in such madness. Then we laugh and laugh. Well, I laugh, she just rolls her eyes at me.

Do any of you ever step outside of yourself and wonder such thoughts?

You don\'t have to be over 30 to try and dodge this bullet :D

Well, I would like to say that I\'m a yonker at this but since I\'ve been painting for longer than some of the folks posting on this list have been alive (23 years at last count) I cant really say that.

By the way Freakinacage, what day in December? Just curious becase I to celebrate my admission to the planet in December.

Right here\'s to Finn17, JimG & reverend and all others reading this thread that are \'mature\' or otherwise indicating that i\'m an old Geezer:-
Please remember that although there may be a little snow on the roof there\'s still a fire in the hearth!
:D
(I remembered that one just after I signed off last night!)

But seriously age is not an issue here, Jen Haley is about the same age as my niece, who looks like her as well. One of the up and coming painters at my local GW store has only been painting for a year, and he will be competing in the Young Bloods,(for this year at least) and boy he is good.
I\'ve been painting off & on since my \'teens and have seriously improved over the last year or so. (All Hail CMON!)

Skill talent and the ability to learn are the primary factors here, as well as the ability to not take your self too seriously.:)

Life\'s for living, or as Robert Heinlen put it in Glory Road: Vive Vivamus!

Hey Chrispy How\'s about a comic for us old crusty\'s.
lol

And here\'s the boobietrap to sow confusion amongst the masses:

\" Frenchkid, are you saying that we are just beginning and they are at their end?\"

lol just kidding, may everyone here live to be 8559 years old, without ever trembling or losing their eye-sight.

Finn - Got you beat by a month.

Finn, 4-17-59 (well, almost a month.)lol

Been painting since the 70\'s (yes I have about 100 lbs (50 kg) of old lead.

I used to think I could paint until I found this site. You know, paint, wash shadows, drybrush highlights, dulcoat & done. So even though I have been painting for longer than some of you have been alive  , I am still learning.

Hey, Frenchkid!

Happy upcoming Birthday! So, the 28th, huh?

I\'m happy(?) to report that I\'m turning 35 on Sunday the 29th and STILL can\'t find time to sit and paint!

To top it off, I\'m getting married in August and am finding even less time than before!

Aarrgh!

My problem is that I\'ve had a HUGE break between painting stretches (7 years at least)

I can\'t seem to get back to the level I was at before. I\'ve forgotten most of my techniques, too. I\'ve been trying to get back into it, but it\'s been rough doing what I did before, and realizing that it\'s not \"THE WAY\" to do it now.

I\'ve never really based anything, and probably won\'t worry about it for awhile since I want to work on my painting first.

Although I have continued to collect minis and have more minis to paint than most anyone I know.

But if you want to feel old, try looking at alot of the minis in the last 2 years and saying to yourself: \"what ever happened to ACTUALLY using metallics?\":p

I start feeling like the Grumpy Old Man from SNL: \"That\'s the way it was and we LIKED it!\"lol

wow, I\'m only 14, I thoughta lot more young people frequented this site (well the may just be not posting). I hate being 14, because 1) everyone is older than me. and 2) next year I won\'t be able to enter youngbloods (I managed tos wipe a 1st at LA this year though). Oh well...
