Tamiya Fine Surface Primer - How is it?

Hello everyone.

I just wanted to get an idea of what people think of this primer. I have not used it and want to see how it holds up in comparison to GW primers. Does it coat well? Is it easy to apply paint over it without hassle? Does it coat smoothly? Etc.

Well I know Tamiya Model primer is excellent in black - as for whatever you have I\'m not sure - but on the whole I\'ve heard that Tamiya are better overall - and given the excellence of their black primer, I would tend to agree

Get Hycote instead - probably about half the price.

I\'ve used it a lot. It does create a smooth surface but can be so smooth that you have trouble basecoating with thin layers. If you\'re willing to keep after it and have patience it gives a great result.

Yeah it\'s my basic white undercoat. Supersmooth but the colour has problem sticking sometimes. Patience is the word.

I absolutely love Tamiya Fine Surface Primer. Yes, it can be supah smooth at times, so if you basecoat with very thin layers 5-10% of the time you might run into problems with the paint pooling and not sticking as well as you might like. I normally thin my paint to where two coats covers, so I haven\'t ran into that problem personally. A friend of mine who glazes (juices?) all his colors on usually shoots a layer of dullcote over the Tamiya before starting in.

I have tried using dullcote over a mini before I painted and that does not work for me. When I did it the model would not hold any paint It would bead up on the surface and it would hold no paint I have no luck with primer.


Is there another white or grey primer that works well besides Tamiya? I know some were mentioned but are there any more? Preferably one that is not enamel.

I\'ve been using Tamiya Fine Surface Primer (Grey) for years. It\'s great!

To clarify my earlier post, I didn\'t mean prime with Dull Cote. I meant to say, if your Tamiya\'s too smooth, and the paint\'s not adhering, spray it with Dull Cote, and it seems to do the trick. Once again, I haven\'t had an issue with Tamiya, but I\'ve heard many say it on other boards.

a lot of Japanese painters use Tamiya, and, as someone else mentioned, they often user Super Clear (JPN dullcote), since it can be very smooth and offer very little tooth for paint.

This is even more pronounced with Gunze\'s Mr Surfacer. I remember trying to paint whites for a Menoth Paladin onto it and the paint just slipping right off.

To the OP: Yes it\'s good and used by a lot of military painters too.

It\'s a shame that people won\'t just go with an auto primer. As good or better than a craft brand, larger can usually and cheaper.

I have grey Vallejo primer. I quite like it, and it seems tougher than the GW stuff. I\'ve had very little trouble with paint refusing to go on. If that happens, it\'s usually because I\'ve put my fingers all over it!
