Tamiya primers

hey all, I was just in my local hobby store when I came across a shelf full of Tamiya spray paints, they aren't as big as GW's, probably about half of the size.

Anyway, I was wondering, are these spray paints good for my plastic GW models? They are much cheaper than GW's sprays and I wanted to save some money.

I've used the Tamiya white spray-on primer before, and I quite like it. It forms this almost rubbery coat on top of your figs when dry, and paint sticks to it really well.

The primers are very good. I find them to be finer than the GW ones but also a little less resilient. They are good for plastic minis, though I might just get some automotive primer if you are painting TT minis.

Have you done a unit comparison? Tamiya primer often works out to be pretty expensive.

Auto primers and similar (as recommended in lots of prior threads on priming) are the cheapest option and there's really no compromise in terms of quality if you get a decent brand. If you hunt around you can find them for around three bucks a can, which works out at 27c per fl oz.

The Tamiya primer I successfully use on my metal and plastic GW miniatures is Tamiya Fine Surface Primer (Light Gray). I've never experienced any problems with this primer. It's great!

Just to be different, there really can be a big difference. I was a krylon guy for years then on a whim I picked up some tamiya primer and let me tell you the difference in the quality of the surface is very noticable.

Tamiya is great on both plastic and metal and is my preferred choice. It's not cheaper though if you look at the unit cost (amount of primer vs cost). It's worth it in my opinion.
