Tamiya

I\'ve recently discovered my local ModelZone and their stock of Tamiya Paints. After a quick search of the forums I found that some of you rave about the \"clear red\", \"smoke\" and other bits so I had to try them. I also got some pots of other things that I\'ve not used before, namely:

- Flat base
- Acrylic thinner
- Clear

I used the thinner with my current GW range of paints (was a bit nervous as I understand that they\'re a different formula from Tamiya) but it seemed to work really well.

My main question was regarding the \"flat base\" - I\'m guessing that you add it to a paint to make the result less shiny ??? Have any of you used it with GW paints (also the \"clear\" with GW paints) and did it work?

I\'m new to using additives other than water (which I can\'t get the hang of  ) so would welcome the voices of experience...

I\'ve used flat base with vallejo acrylics, added in tiny quantities.........Juame Ortiz (user Gloom on here....he\'s good!) uses it and from experience knows some colours dry with a sheen. He does stress to using only tiny amounts.

I\'ve never used it with GW paints, but maybe best to start with adding small amounts and see how it goes.

I\'ve successfully used the acrylic thinner 50/50 with GW paint and airbrushed it.

There\'s been a lot of talk on the airbrush boards of using the flat base mixed with future as a dull coat. I thin the ratio was like 4:1 future to flat base and you could vary it depending on how flat you wanted it.

I\'ve noticed that using Liquitex Dry Time Extender as an additive in my thinner causes the Tamiya clear colors (red, smoke, and orange I have) to get much thicker and flow very poorly - despite using flow improver as well. I have a separate pot of water/surfactant that I use generally with washes, but I have to use it with my Tamiya colors for anything.

I\'ve also found (unfortunately) that the Tamiya clear colors (at least red and orange) severely bleed when you try and paint anywhere near them. I\'ve had to apply coats of Testor\'s Dull Cote to seal them before I was able to paint over and near them without the colors muddling.

Haven\'t used any of the other ones you mentioned, but I\'m guessing that the Clear color is something you could probably add to another color as a glaze/wash medium? Tamiya stuff flows fairly well right out of the pot...

Tamiya clear mixed with GW is mental! Goes like jelly! I use the clear red mixed with chaos black (about 4:1) for blood effects. Be warned though, yo have to do it fast as it jelly\'s up pretty shifty. To get them paintable like other acrylics you need ALOT of water.

The drying speed has something to do with Tamiyas being thinned with Alcohol (hence the smell) but other than that i have no idea.

Learn by my mistakes...

Never apply \"Flat Base\" neat mistaking it for a form of varnish  Luckily I did this on a test area just to see what happens but that mess is going to take some painting over. Live and learn...
