Tanned Flesh

I have an old Heartbreaker Miniatures necromancer sitting on my table, waiting for me to start on him, but I need some help. I want to do his robes as human skin, but I am not sure what colors to use. The skin wouldn\'t look the same as living flesh, it would be like tanned leather I imagine. Any ideas?

Sounds like an interesting idea...

Here are some ramblings. First, are you wanting to go with been-in-the-ground-a-while-flesh, or newly-dead-flesh? When I first read the question, I was thinking newly-dead-flesh (skin freshly flayed from the victim(s)). Rummaging though my limited browns I thought vallejo cork brown would be a good choice. The trick is to get the viewer to realize it is flesh and not just a brown robe. Would having several different skin tones add to the effect? Perhaps with the patches outlined with a darker color in a \"sewn together\" pattern done freehand? Or adding \"scars\" to different areas of the robe? I think the tanned effect could be achieved with using Magic Wash as a diluent--in my limited experience it tends to give a slightly shiny appearance to the paint.

Other ideas--what about green stuff to fashion other body parts to attach to the robe--fingers, bones, a hand, etc. How about (again more of a freehand) face drawn onto a portion of the robe. Have you seen Silence of the Lambs? Basically taking the face of the victim (a la Anthony Hopkins) and stretching it out over a flat surface.

Yikes--I didn\'t realize such a morbid topic would generate such a slew of suggestions!

good thoughts....

I think the tanned leather, but just a smidge darker would work. Then maybe a sickly green wash could give it that unwholesome look.

What ever you decide, be sure to post it, it sounds cool!

Jabberwocky - you are one sick miniature painter - welcome to the club! lol I am thinking of the been-in the ground-awhile look. There are no patches to the cloak, but there are all these skulls on it, so I\'m not sure I would be able to do much to create any seams on it. But now that I think about it, a robe would have to be made up of smaller pieces of skin, so I will have to try it.

Supervike - maybe Reaper Oiled Leather, highlighted with a fleshtone? I like the idea of the green wash too, I will have to try that as a test first and use it if it looks right.

These old Heartbreaker figures always get my imagination going because they are so over the top.

You could paint in stitches to make the cloth look like a patchwork of skin sewn togther. If you can achieve it, bits of tatoos would also be. Although I\'m struggling to think how you would stop a tatoo from looking like a pattern on a cloth.

To take the shading thing a bit area I would probably add some pulpish/black blotches to represent bruising as I would think that the victim who donatedthe cloak in the first place would have taken a bit of a battering before he gave up his hide.

The stitching idea is great. Kind of like a patchwork quilt.

That Reaper Oiled Leather would be the perfect base color for the robes.

I really should preview my posts before I post them it should have read to take the shading thing a bit further any way yes the stitching would look good. If you look at the old Citadel Heinrich Kimmler min (I\'m not sure about that spelling) but anyway that figure had a simular look.

Looks like the patchwork thing is what I will try, I think I will try to cut the seams in with an x-acto knife so they look more 3D. The raised skulls all over the robe could serve as the joining spot of the seams too. I like the bruising idea, not sure how I will pull that off, but it might be worth a try. I think I will fit this guy into my projects for this weekend; I\'ll put a WIP in here when I get the robe going.

Well, there are so many folds and little skull medallions all over I didn\'t think the skin robe thing was going to work - the seams just weren\'t going to be possible. But in looking at White Dwart 296, the Dark Elf Manflayers have banners and such with large areas of skin that just look stretched, so why not a robe? So, I will post a WIP to for feedback after I get the robe painted. Thanks again for the help so far!
