Tau painting question

I\'m having a little difficulty painting my Tau models... I always give them a black basecoat, but this makes it very hard to paint on the vomit brown. It takes me at least 4 layers of (thinned) paint to achieve a smooth look. The result looks ok (http://www.coolminiornot.com/index.php?id=18831&c=All&m=All&nm=none) but I lose a lot of time with this.

Will a white basecoat fix this problem?

Probably... Even grey would be an improvement over black, which IMO is a sucky base colour except for metallic armour.

In actuallity I have had much success in layig progressively lighter colors over black primer.
In the case of light browns and yellows I usually use a darker brown for my base coat. It may cut down the number of coats you need to achieve good coverage to two. Doing it this way also gives an impression of greater deapth to the colors.
