Yeah, that's the thing I figured on, bloo , poiple and bwown washes. Reckon it is gonna need build ups, they seem to fade into oblyvion...

Bahaha! Nah I was just kina busy recently. Bit more progress to report, the pics were kina bleachy but I got rid of most of it with my awesome editing skillz. I decided to piss about with a bit of weathery stuff on the power plant, shame you can't really see the blueing and stuff in the pics though. If you looks closely you can make it out in places. Not sure what to make of it right now, myself.

I say those streaks look real good man, they add some real depth to that fancy paintjob. That begs for more soot and rust & dirt.

Some of the streaks look overdone IMHO, they feel sort of weird on the prstine paintjob. Are you going to do some battledamage, cdhipping and the like, to tie everything together?

Did you do your streaks with acrylic or oil paints?

Judging from the bottom edge of the power plant, I'd say yes. Or it is just sloppy metallic painting. Which makes me wonder who painted those fancy minis in TBS's gallery...

Well caught by Chad there. The only thing that's received any sort of weathering/ damage so far is the power plant and the leg plate with the design on it. I'm going to finish it all pretty then turn to dirtying it up a bit to tie it all together. Going for a kinda "been in a good scrap" look, I think. I'm not sure they'd actually let a venerable warrior like Bjorn fall into a messy state of disrepair ;) I used acrylics for the whole lot, never experimented with oils before...Might be something to play about with in the future though!

Just don't combine oils and acrylics on the same mini. :D

It's looking very nice. It will be interesting to see a few knocks and dings rather than the "so much battle damage its held together with chewing gum and string" type of look. I would think it might be easy to either go overboard or do so little that it looks forced. But it will be interesting to see what you come up with. Good luck m'dear!

lol! That's exactly what I don't want it to look like. It really is too easy to over do it, that's why i'm gonna do it after it's cobbled together to keep a bit of balance ;)

Oh, absolutely DO combine oils on acrylics... Just be sure to give your model a coat of gloss varnish before the oils and a satin varnish afterwards. The first one is to protect your underlying layers and increase the fluidity of the oil paints/inks, and the second coat (after it's thoroughly dry) is to fixate your oils and move on to the next step (such as weathering powders). Once you see how oil paints work and flow on the model you'll first suspect alchemy and then you'll wonder why you never tried that earlier.
I'm currently holding off on finishing my BA Tac. squad because i first want to have all decals in place before I give the models a wash of thinned black oil paint to outline the details. Awesome stuff, oil paints, awesome stuff...

combining oils and acrylics shouldnt be a problem, but i suggest you use oils first and glacing with acrylics when dry. not that im a master of this though, im about to make first oil try myself sooooon

I'd reaaaaally suggest to keep the oils as one of the latest steps, after all glazes and such... the oil paint gives such a specific wash to the model and details that glazing it afterwards would just undo/hide the effect it gives.

hmm. im not with you there, i know that people use washes of oils in the end steps, but blending with oil colours after acrylics doesnt sounds right to me (?)

Ah, but oil paints are rarely used on mini's for actual painting anymore. Most people use them just for weathering and detail washes. Mix 'm up to somewhere between 1:5 -1:10 paint-turpentine and you've got a brilliant ink for stains/rust/grease if you use Burnt Umber, or slick & narrow detail outlining using black. Stir long and hard and re-stir intermittently as the paint-turpentine mix tends to settle down quite fast in your mix pot. The cool thing is that this mix sucks itself into every nook & cranny unlike any acrylic ink I've ever seen...

what language is this again??? im totally flumoxed by your techno talk lol, must be where im going wrong mental note to self mix stuff wiv water n stuff.

well... the easiest translation is if you mentally replace the word turpentine (odourlous, from a models supply store, not the stinky burn-your-nostrils DIY kind) by water. Same thing as with acrylics, but as oil & water don't mix, you'll have to use turpentine as your 'water'.

Burnt Umber is just the name of the pigment. As oil paint is old skool, the names are universal and have been around since centuries (1650 in case of Burnt Umber).

I must admit I'm have quite a sarcastic day today... In any case better than yesterday, when I put a random collaegue in his place rather harshly for his rude behaviour. Oh boy, did he look like a scared little bunny afterwards...

I dunno, i'm down with the whole cave wall deal. Might be able to charge stupid tourists to see it later. Just have to make sure Cass is in residence so they don't feel let down by the promised "Be chased by the man time forgot as he defends his homestead from intruders" bit. If I keep him paid in beer he'll look/play the part well!
