Techniques for painting stone walls?

I've seen some tips on painting realistic looking stone, but it tends toward slate, marble and so on... Not really any type of stone I'd build walls out of. Any good tips or links that would help me paint an attractive castle tower?

The way I did my walls, was with 4 colors. I started with a very dark brown. I then used a soft brush with a little amount of a lighter brown to start to bring out the detail. Then an even lighter brown, that had a touch of gray. Then I used as a final highlight a craft paint, Americana brand, Dove grey. It is a soft grey with some brown in it.
