Terminator: Hammers of Dorn (Updated 18.7)

Here is my recent work. I bought this book called The Art of Clint Langley and there I saw some really cool pictures of these hammers of Dorn marines. Those black clad marines look really awesome and his pictures inspired me to paint this fella black.

One thing I really like is that face/head. I managed to paint it rather well, but I must admit that the sculpt itself is really cool and thus easy to paint well.

So, any comments...

Awesome paint job!
Love your black! I\'ve painted my termis black, too,but they look totaly crap on picts...

The NMM totally rocks and the face has a lot of dept/expression (have you converted the face in any way or do the new Termis have them as a standart???).

Er, yowzah!

I don\'t think I\'ve seen reflective highlights done quite like this. Very effective. I\'ll have to file it away under \'great stuff to copy later\'.

I really like your blacks. I don\'t really care much for space marines, but it\'s a very gutzy effect and you pulled it off pretty well. There are a few edges and highlights that could be tightened up, but I bet it looks totally slammin\' in real life and at scale.

One thing I really like is that you snuck some other colors into the black, giving it some hue. Nice touch.

I haven\'t converted it but new termis models have them as standard. There is only one head without helmet per box.

I have thought about that. It might look cool if I just have enough patience to paint a whole unit one those guys. Maybe...

Well, I was going to ask about how you did the NMM and face, (because they are fantastic, especially the face) so I can attempt something similar when I get my Terminators....but I checked the GW site.... 50 Pounds! Fifty English Pounds for five little plastic men. With the forgeworld extras I\'ve got it adds up to nearly seventy quid to put five men on the table!

Actually, can I get the recipe anyway? :rolleyes:

As for face I started with couple of layers with GW foundation Tallarn flesh, which IMO is much better that dwarf flesh.
I added Rackham\'s Noesis White and small amount of Vallejo elf skintone for highlights. Just add small amounts of this mix to the base color (in this case Tallarn flesh), for each successive highligh layer.

Shades:
First add some Scorched Brown (gw) to tallarn flesh.
When painting cheeks, add small amount of dark flesh (gw) or other reddish paint to the mix. I used this mix to shade some parts around nose and eyes.
When painting that beard (or stubble) I added some Grey and Noesis white paint to tallarn flesh and startted to paint the beard with that. At first it doesn\'t look too grey but you can add more grey to those areas of face that are supposed to have stronger shades.
I use skin colors with grey, so that the border between skin and beard would not be too visible. The stubble kind of \"blends in\" and it doesn\'t look like fake etc.

Recipe for NMM-metals is rather simple: Base with Codex Grey and highlight with mix of grey and white. Shading with mix of grey and black. Finally you can paint couple thin washes of black and dark blue over those metallic parts.

I can\'t really give any specific advices what comes to that black. Black can be a bit difficult. One thing you can do is to apply some very thin black washes if the surface is getting too grey and I didn\'t use much grey when painting those extreme highlights.

I made new base for this one. I attended to a local painting contest, so I decided to make a new base for the old one was perhaps too plain.

I actually won that contest :bouncy:
