After entering in the Relic painting competition I was inspired to try another model -- this one is for a local competition. Everyone has one month to paint this bad boy; he\'s due the first Sunday in May. I\'m probably 75-80% finished already but want some suggestions on the force staff.

I\'ve tried to do source lighting again -- not object source (OSL) -- and highlighted the armour as though the light were slightly forward and on his left side. When I get him in to the photo box this effect should show up better. It is most visible on his pointing arm where it\'s nearly black except for the light blue on the top.

ok this has nothing to do with critiquing but i am wanting to paint this one and was wondering how fun or easy or what not it was to paint. just wondered.

i too have this mini and haven\'t got a clue how to highlight it properly.
the staff is also a problem. you need some really contrasting colours to make it look ok. i like what you have done with th robe , although i think it doesn\'t fit the rest of the pic IMO.
i hope to join that comp. don\'t know if i still can though.

@uberdark: trick question, that. I\'ve enjoyed painting this model -- but I haven\'t found one yet that I didn\'t enjoy painting.

@COG: Right, you\'re local! So what is it about the robe that you think doesn\'t work?

I\'m leaning in the direction of a red staff. More red should still work on this model. Then silver/gold runes? I\'m just stuck when it comes to that staff. Maybe make the whole thing gold?

[UPDATE: it\'s funny; I was just looking at the photo and realized that the light source highlighting doesn\'t really show up at all.... because of the glare from the lamp RIGHT WHERE THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE. Excellent.]

Alright i just got home. Sorry the computer at works Graphics card sucks. so everthing is blured :cussing:. work sucks. anyway now that i see this clearly the robes look a lot better. i now see the extreme highlighting. interesting way to do it. it definitely works with this model
as it has a lot of robes on robes on scrolls. what chapter ?.
oh and the detail in the books rocks. looks like astrology.lol

oh and the staff does look good red, but im not sure you would be able to tell the diffirence between the gold and silver IMO.

No chapter yet. Because I will probably sell this one when he\'s finished I\'m leaving the knee grey. I will include adding in a chapter badge as part of the auction price.

I think I will go ahead and do this staff in red. More practice on my red blending anyway

$20 will get you the \"Sanctum Imperialis\" kit from GW -- and it makes great bits for your bases and vehicles

I really never expect to use a single piece of the Cities of Death buildings for their original, intended purpose.

the cities of death buildings are great for basing.way better than almost any else. its just too bad that the urban basing kit is so hard to come by. the resin bits are swell and it sthe same price.

I went back today for the monthly painting group at the local store and found out this fella had taken the win on the competition from last month... with all but one vote!

That makes him my first win and the first piece I\'ve had in the display cabinet.

Points on which I\'m told he won:

• Flesh and character of his face
• Freehand on the books
• Text \"LUX OCCULTA\" on the bookmark
• Source lighting on the armour

I got more feedback about how he could have used some OSL from the staff -- and, unfortunately, you can still only see the lighting effect in the first photo. Even in the light box the highlights just look like glare since that\'s where the light actually falls.

His right knee is still blank since I\'ll probably send this guy to eBay eventually and add whatever chapter badge by request.

If anyone still wants additional close-up photos just let me know and I\'ll see what I can do.

Was wondering when you were going to post this. it looks even better IRL. the flooring looks crazy cant figure how you did it. oh and sorry i didnt get to vote at all.

No worries; I figured your vote was the one for the other mini

The flooring wasn\'t actually difficult. I did a drybrush with GW Codex Grey and then used a chunk of regular kitchen sponge to add lighter grey, green, white and blue. The corner chunk of a kitchen sponge can make for some great marble effects.

Glad you got to see it in the shop though; I really can\'t get the photos to do it justice.

Next month\'s model is a Warmachine \" Epic Skarre, Queen of the Broken Coast\" -- I\'ll get a thread started once I figure out how to put the model together

Ours does but all you ever win is a crappy goblin drybrushed gold and stuck to a paint pot. It wouldn\'t even be so bad if there was anything left in the paint pot
