Test Tau.

I have a project in the idea stage at the mo\', which I want to get done throughout the year - well, I\'ve given myself GD:UK to get it done (wether or not I do is a moot point really). Purely for fun, and to test myself in colours I haven\'t really used that much before.

This actually meant doing a Tau in fairly standard colours, but they were the colours which I felt worked best with the idea of the base that is going to be the main thrust of the diorama.

Still, a test was needed, and this is where we\'re up after a few days work:

I really really like this scheme. The base is fantastic, the color goes perfectly with the skin while the armor has a nice subtle camo.

If you do any vehicles, please make them heavily battle worn :flip:

The base was dead simple really - I found a nice bit of cork which I shaped a little, added a little more height with some milliput, and just added standard grade sand. I then added very fine sand over the top of this in some areas which gave it a little more depth. All I\'ve done so far is paint it orange, and then have just bunged on loads of red, purple and brown washes. Haven\'t yet started to do any highlighting, and won\'t until I\'ve finished the figure itself, but as a base it\'s really one of the easiest I\'ve done in ages!

Base and face color combination is great, not to mention the paint job on the suit this far.

I love the alien landscape feel of the base. Can\'t wait to see it all done or a bunch of these with the same theme.

I like what you have tried to achieve with the digital camo on the shoulder pad, although it would be nice to have it carry across to the other areas of the piece? I suspect that you have avoided this as the other parts of the model are very busy with sculpted detail? But that then leaves the question of why have it on the shoulder pad at all? hmmm.

Otherwise though the little conversion details and the base are very atmospheric and so I look forward to seeing hoe this developes in the future!

warhound: I know what you mean about the shoulder pad - quite honestly, it was a last minute choice to do something a little bit different, although I may well decide to go for it when I get around to the diorama itself. The figure was always going to be a test piece to work out ideas, and it\'s certainly having that effect!

I really like it as well. The color scheme on the armor and camo/clothes is nice and the painting is crisp.

If I had to offer some criticism, I would say the face is a little off- it\'s very saturated and maybe even a little flat. Looks like it could use some deeper shadows and brighter highlights.

Wow, the fine control of color on this model is really great. The base, the armor, the cloth, it all fits together perfectly. Very subtle variations which are great for camo.

I\'m not exactly sure what CrookedEye is getting at with the skin color. I agree that the color might be a bit over-saturated compared to the rest of the model. A paler or more greyish blue might help it mesh with the earth tones a bit better. I don\'t think upping the contrast with more shading and hilighting is going to help when the rest of the model is all about subtlety.

Not yet I\'m afraid! Work on the scene\'s probably not going to start for a while yet, but the gist is a desert scene with various Tau wandering down in various states of injury, tiredness etc. I really want to try to get some sense of heat from the thing, but we\'ll see.

Anyhoo, here\'s the end result of the figure - not entirely happy with it, but it\'s served it\'s purpose nicely
