Thanks for slowing me down!

A while back I decided to do a conversion involving the top half of a squig hopper. I mentioned that I was going to be separating the rider from the squig with my newly aquired dremmel.

Well... everyone and their brother on these forums had to put their two cents worth in on safety. \"That\'s too much metal for a dremmel to cut through,\" you said. \"A dremmel bit can break!\" you said. \"Wear your goggles,\" you said. \"My friend lost his arm and his left testicle in a dremmel accident,\" you said.

Well I said \"Fooey.\" Ok, I didn\'t say fooey, but I was fully prepared to say \"FOOEY!\"

After a couple of months passed I was finally ready to get to work on said conversion. I had my squig hopper. I had my goggles. I had my mask. I had my dremmel. The kids were in bed. I was ready. So I clicked the dremmel on and put it to the squig. After about ten seconds of lead dust filling the air and tiny bits of pewter zinging into hyperspace by my ears I clicked the dremmel off. I removed the bit, then the battery pack, then I packed it away where the kids cannot reach. See, I had this unmistakable vision of a chunk of squig leg flying into my face and burrying itself in my tender flesh. Naturally the pain would cause me to drop the spinning dremmel into my lap, and a real-life humpty dumpty story would ensue.

So, where does that leave me? After about 5 hours of hacking away at the squig with wire cutters I have finally managed to remove 80% of it from the hopper. Unfortunately the last 20% will not be so easy. I will have to whittle away at the rest, shard by ever-lovin\' shard of pewter, with my exacto knife, until I have just the goblin I want. Curse you safety freaks! Curse you for ruining my fast conversion!

My hands hurt so bad from squeezing the wire cutters. At one point I actually stood on the wire cutters to get through the squig. Then I had wire plyers to sqeeze the metal end of the cutters while my sore hands squeezed the handle end. These damn squigs were not made to cut easily. Why can\'t they be hollow? Chocolate Santas are hollow. My high school girl friend was hollow. Why not squigs?

ps. I\'ll post the pics of the conversion when I\'m done next year.:D

I\'ve forgotten, was it the squig or the rider that you wanted? If it was the squig, why didn\'t you just get it from Mail order?

Mike, you evil SOB

I have just sprayed capuccino all over my monitor. Barkel got me going - thanks for that entertaining story.
But the thought that a phone call to GW would have provided the end result was just too muchlol
Mike, clean your glasses for God\'s sake,

I can\'t afford a new monitor this close to Christmas:bouncy:

the rider.

I\'m not really upset by the ordeal. I wanted to vent. My time table of finishing this conversion in a month has been lenthened. I\'m not sure my ADD will every allow me to finish now.

I wanted the rider because he has so much character. The typical goblin wolf riders are too plain. The squig riders look maniacle.

I actually considered using the squig riders for a unit of goblin wolf riders. But now I see what it will take to separate 10 goblins from their squigs... there\'s no way in a luke warm Hadees I\'m even gonna try.

At the risk of ruining your Xmas...

Have you seen the Dragonrune wolf riders? You don\'t get more character than that...Wolf and rider!!
They did go out of business but I have heard they are up and running again the moulds having been bought by an American source??

actually, yes.

I have seen their line. They are fantastic. And I was pleased to hear that the molds would still be used. Still, I had my heart set on this squig hopper. I\'m stubborn that way. But, if this takes much longer I may change my spots.

Errr... Why don\'t you just use a jeweler\'s saw to finish off the job. Exacto knife would be extremely slow and... well... dangerous (but that might just be in my hands).

Don\'t start!

Firstly, I have no idea what a jeweler\'s saw is. It sounds just about as dangerous a dremmel bit chewing through metal.

Secondly, I\'m at the point where every cut I make has to be pretty exact (no pun intended). If I cut to big a piece away the little gobbo will be missing a leg or worse.

Thirdly, I am pretty careful. I don\'t think there is any danger of cutting myself with the exacto again.:)

All that\'s left of the squig is the scalp. Right now it looks pretty much like the goblin is sitting on an odd saddle. I could slap him on a horse right now and no one would be the wiser.

ps. Tell me more about this saw you speak of. Is it deadly?

Only if your wife has it in her hands.lol

You can check out what one looks like via GW\'s online store, under tools/accessories. They are a lot slower to use, but because of that you can exercise greater control of the cut.

Finn17, Sorry to ruin your cappocino and monitor. Been a busy and frustrating day!

Jeweler\'s saw

It\'s much less dangerous than an exacto or a dremel. A quick googling turned up this site here that has a picture:

http://www.2spi.com/catalog/tools/smtol17.shtml

It\'s basically like a hacksaw but with a thinner blade. With some skill you can make pretty nice cuts, and the thinner blade also allows you to change angles as you cut (but carefully! you can break the blade trying this).

Yup, they were bought by a company called \"the Tin Dictator\" and now are available either directly form the dragonrune home page, or from the Warstore

http://www.thewarstore.net

The scale is slightly larger, than that of standard \'orcs and goblins\' but you are dead on, you won\'t find more character sculpted into these types of minis....
