The alternative SINISTER wip thread

Ok, time to split the CMON camp again as I go toe to toe with Liz (and any others who join in) with soliciting help for our next little comp. I chose the theme \"Sinister\" with one particular mini in mind - MorgueMaster McMourning by Wyrd. I\'d won him for voting/commenting on the TT comp recently and knew I had to find a reason to paint him. However, as the standards in the competitions are increasing monthly (and I really do include all entrants in that statement) I knew I had to do a little bit more so...

PICT0364.jpg

...this is the initial mock up for the scene I\'m planning and will be cutting the room down in size a bit. The main intent is to focus on what is about to happen leaving the viewers\' minds to conjure up their own sinister image. The crate the victim is lying on will be replaced by something more clinical when I find something appropriate. I aim to put a small lantern on the right of the back wall with a little osl effect (never tried it but it sounds so much fun ;) ) and have the corner with the cage very dark and shadowy in cotrast so you can barely make out the figure there. I\'ve also got various other bits and pieces to decorate the walls, and will add spots of dried blood etc around to reinforce the image of nastiness in the room. The final touch will be a small dog (courtesy of OrkyDave and ME13) if I can ever paint the thing right! The pink rubber gloves are deliberate but will be toned down when I start the proper painting. I want them to be the only spot of bright colour (apart from the lamp) to draw attention to that area.

So, what are your thoughts, suggestions and tips? I really need to put Liz back in her place this time round, she\'s not as attractive when she gloats ;)

ps Hi liz, love you

Hmmmm. Interesting. Not bad actually. If your painting can hold up to your planning the rest of us might really have some competition in you after all (For all you people out there who don\'t know, Billy actually won this comp LAST month and is feeling a bit miffed that I stole his crown after months of losing and having to chose the theme. He\'s a bad loser, but we love him anyway).

 excellent idea Billy....I know you plan on making the room small but have you thought of breaking the squareness of the walls to a broken pattern

I think that your background needs some additional elements. Such as surgical gear and hand carts, tools hanging on the wall, etc. Looks like a good start though.

I\'ve been looking around for suitable elements but no luck so far. If anyone has any good links in this area please let me know :)

and Thanks Donna, I\'d been thinking that but thought I\'d wait and see if anyone else thought it was a good idea

My theme was originally going to be \"Special Delivery\" - seems we think alike

There may be something of use here:

If you want to throw money at it then there\'s always something here that may be useful:

or depending on how much tech you want in the scene.

Cheers Roger, that dissection table in the last link is gloroius. but What I\'m really after is a small operating table and a bench or tray of surgical instruments (I think the closest I\'ve seen are blacksmith tools)

Ok, does anyone out there have the WH40K Cities of Death Stratagem Buiding Set? Flicking through my old White Dwarfs I saw there was a resing piece in it with tools that may be exactly what I\'m after. But of course it was a limited release so I can\'t get it anymore :( If anyone doies have the set I\'m willing to buy/trade for the part or the whole kit of you like. Thanks!

In the meantime, all I\'ve had the chance to do so far is trim the wall and floor down to fit a GW movement tray. I cut around th brickwork to give a random edge to the walls and hopefully I\'ll get a bit further into it tonight.

I had this same thought... purple, elbow length latex gloves... I think I\'d avoid that doctor.

Ok, I\'ve not been able to spend much time on this but here\'s what I\'ve done so far on the floor, walls and main character.

Note the attempt at same very basic (and small) osl from the lamp. The left side of the scene will be very dark so I didn\'t want the lamp to be too bright, just enough to add contrast to the scene. Stilla a long way to go and I still haven\'t found a suitable prop for the table or surgical tools :(

What do you think?

 like what you have done with the wall so far, maybe age some of the bricks so it’s not a uniform color, even a few claw marks on the wall like a victim was trying to escape.

Mad Doctor is coming along, I always wondered why he had a feathered head dress, he would look stunning with a pink feather boa ;)

great osl. to be picky - there are some highlights on the right hand edge (ie further away from the lamp) that shouldn\'t be there

OK, so it wasn\'t much of a WIP thread but I didn\'t have a lot of time this month to do the painting so everything just kind of happened at the last minute. So, here\'s the result of another rush job...

Although half the original idea is missing, there are a couple of bits I\'m happy with, particularly the osl on the sword and wall and the blood pool by the dog which looks even fresher in real life.

Looks good, Billy. With more time you could have really pushed out the boat on this one, shame you didn\'t have enough time to do all you wanted.

They gave us a week\'s extension but poor Billy doesn\'t seem to be able to use it. You know, if Billy actually got more than a few minutes together he\'d be a really good painter. I really like this one and was looking forward to seeing it done up proper. Oh well.
