Now, my question before I start is this. Does anybody know where I can get a suitably scaled GMC Vandura with fat wheels and a spoiler?

28mm roughly converts to 1:48 scale. I don't know too many kits aside from aircraft that are 1:48. Most cars are 1:24 or larger. I know there was a kit of B.A's van, as I built one in the 80's. I think it was made by AMT/ERTL.

Check google and ebay. Be prepared for the possibility a pre-existing kit in 1:48 scale does not exist. You may have to scratchbuild one from photos.

You might also look into O scale model railroad vehicles - they're 1/43 scale.

http://www.modelzone.co.uk/hot-wheels-elite-1-43-a-team-classic-tv-series-van-limited-edition.html it ain't cheap but it's roughly the size you want most of the others will be 1:25 to match the three and 3/4 inch action figures or 1:15 r/c versions the 1:25 ones are pretty easy to find since the film came out as are the remote control stuff but for the scale you want it might be a bit tougher as it's a "specialist item" i.e. the makers know we are sad gits that want them for war gaming or model train set ups so charge the earth for the stuff
