The Bane of my Bitzbox: The Space Marine Librarian

For three long years this mini has haunted my bitz box and today the bell tolls for thee! I\'m using him to enter an online painting contest so this will finally force me to confront my demons and paint him up well. I guess the part that daunts me is the amount of different angles and surfaces on this guy.

I did a small bit of conversion work; i.e. his exposed hand and his weapon which will be a power weapon at some point.

As for the colors, I\'m going for something a bit unusual. The color I\'m using at the base is Menoth White Base by P3. The highlights will be more of brighter eggshell white. The cloak and his shoulder trim around him is a blue with a hint of green in it. Now I\'m not sure what colors are appropriate to shade and highlight these, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Aside from turning this into a blending workshop, I\'m pulling out the stops and going for NMM this time around. I figure this guy will be a learning experience so I\'ll swing for the fences or strike out trying.

I just can\'t wait to get this guy nice and complete as he\'s been haunting my bitz box for far too long.

Any advice from here on out is greatly appreciated!

Happy painting!

Let\'s try this again...

So I\'m not really sure what possessed me to do this, but I restarted my guy in a way that I can gain a better understanding about the way light hits this mini. So, with this crazy idea in mind, I cleaned him up, primed him black then did a spritz of white from the direction of light that will be coming down on him from his base.

Overall it gives a monochromatic look to him and it will actually help me shade and highlight the little bugger. Now it comes down to a selection of key colors. The bone white idea was cool, but I\'m not sure if I could actually pull it off.

I\'ll be using the color as a guide to the depth of highlights and shading that I\'ll do later on. I hope this pays off. I have until the 26th to the get finished product going.

Back in a groove...

I made some progress tonight on my librarian. I\'ve never painted a blue space marine before, or at least in my memory so I gave into curiosity and now I have a smurf staring at me from my desk.

Most of the base-coating for the armor is done, but I got sidetracked and decided to just try some blending here and there. It\'s more prominent on his left arm, but I\'m working to get more and more of his armor blended nicely. I am having a little trouble determining where I should put my highlights and my shadows, but I\'m just trudging through.

I have to remind myself not to rush at all and to just take my time.

I do need to work on the shading much more and the highlights a bit more. Overall though, it\'s a lot of fun and I\'m only really on the power armor. I used to hate that stuff...

Anyways, back to painting.

Too bad you didn\'t mention that you had one of these models before you decided to paint it, it\'s one I need to finish off a Blood Raven force and the conversion is quite nice. Hehe. Looking forward to see how this progresses, it\'s actually one of the few Space Marine models I still like and am not completely sick of seeing.

Really? I love the Blood Ravens from the game, in fact I think it\'d be fun to paint one... let me see what I can do ;)...

*Edit*
He may just turn into a Blood Raven yet! The weather\'s been pretty muggy here so the primer wasn\'t properly set on him so I may have to redo him anyways. Stupid humid weather... I\'m just getting the hang of blending.

Yarrr! Don\'t let mother nature foil your plans! Next time, paint inside when it\'s raining... ;):D

But in all seriousness, I\'m looking forward to seeing this smurf raven progress...

But I love painting in crappy conditions; it adds flavor.

The little guy is sitting in brake fluid as we speak. Then I\'m calling in the big guns. Considering I\'m visiting my parents at the moment, they have a very nice little tool:

This baby will blast the paint right off the model once it\'s loosened up. I stripped an entire army I bought off eBay once. It\'s rather fun.

Nope! It\'s not a sandblaster, it\'s a steam cleaner! It works like a charm once the paint is all softened up from being loosened by either Simple Green or Brake Fluid. It works like a dream in the crevices of the minis as well. Doesn\'t damage them one bit.

A sandblaster on the other hand would probably annihilate it.
