the earth does what? around the sun?

I guess if they do the same survey in 10 years time then there will be different results as the education system and amount of media attention science issues get\'s is a bit different...
The sun one is amazing only 53% ..damn...

I know when I was at school I was good at sciences Got A.B,C in Biology , geog , chemistry A-level and have kept an interest since but the trouble with it is science constantly changes .The Human Genome project blew a lot of theories I learned in Biology right out the window.
I guess maintaining an interest has led me to keep up to speed but it is still scary that people would rather know what dress a certain star wears to some premiere than what could actually affect their life or the earth.....
And these people vote impressed by issues to help the environment etc....madness.

Interesting, but I just plain don\'t buy it.

Too many variables go into those polls and they are horrendously skewed from the get go.

As George Carlin once said: \'Think of how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of them are stupider than that\'.

When asked whom they trust as a reliable source of information about the environment and the natural world, the public overwhelmingly looks to scientists for a reliable perspective. Teachers ranked a distant second, while government officials and business leaders tied for last place.

* Scientists 64%
* Teachers 15%
* Reporters 6%
* Government Officials 3%
* Business Leaders 3%

Now that scares the crap out of me. I wouldn\'t trust most scientists unless they can hand me the data that proves their viewpoint. And I effectively am a scientist.

oh well. Stuff like this comes up every few years. I remember the one time magazine had a european survey with true or false questions in which 80% said that \"Normal tomatoes don\'t have genes, only genetically modified ones do.\" was true.

Ignorance is only an issue in people that formulate government policies, or are in a position in which they need to make decisions, not in the average man on the street. Now if they did that sort of survey among politicians and got the same results I\'d be worried.

One of our local news channels were doing interviews with people over the GM debate and a respondent came up with that exact line \"I won\'t buy tomatoes if they have genes in them\".

Thats exactly why you dont trust them! I presume you, like them, have been taught how to manipulate data (using statistical techniques) to prove whatever you want ;)

I, theoretically, am a scientist too :drunk::yes:

Sorry, I should have clarified the data point.

I meant raw data prior to any \"Statistical modfication\" and an experiment that I can repeat and get results that compare.

Was never taught how to manipulate the data. That gets learnt through experience. It\'s kind of a survival tool. Right up there with if the equipment doesn\'t work, hit it with a hammer. That way it either works, or it is now completely broken and should be replaced.

Yeah, I know ;) Thats why I was saying that as a scientist you know what statistics can do to data to make it say almost anything you want, hence why you\'d want the original, raw, data ;)

Don\'t ever try that trick with anything that has \"liquid chromatography\" or \"flow cytometer\" in the name lol

I am impressed that scientists made the top of the list for people that American public trust. The current US government is trying their hardest to destroy people\'s trust in science, between trying to run the CDC and FDA according to Christian sexual morality and trashing any science that contradicts their policies on issues ranging from global warming to stem cells.

Woohoo! It\'s not call High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography for nothing. And then you still have to explain why the board needs to spend a few pula more million to replace the stuff. No, not a good idea at all.

As for the statistics, I find it far too hard to believe that 53% of all Yanks don\'t know the Earth takes a year to go around the Sun. At a push, I\'d believe it of South Africa, where access to decent education lags far behind America. Really, a bushman couldn\'t give a rat\'s putrid arse anyway.

The scarey part is that over 90% of these science ignorants were interested in environmental issues. (i.e. whatever Al Gore says or worse).

...Data schmata. Face it were screwed!

I\'m a leading scientist in the field of hammer reperation tecniques. I\'d like very much to test my theories on one of those flowhojahmadoodums. :twisted:

Don\'t forget to mention that they also want Intelligent Design taught as a scientific alternative to evolution.

edit: technically I\'m an engineer not a scientist. They don\'t let us near those nice delicate pieces of equipment.

my average day at work.
\"I wonder what happens if we do this\"
We do this, stuff gets sprayed everywhere, we change our clothes.
\"Ok so that\'s bad. but what if we change this\"

You get the idea.

Don\'t forget the \"These are really dumbass questions, so lets screw up the answers\" strategy, that some people apply to street questionaires.

Not that I would ever do anything like that. :rolleyes::innocent:

Exactly! Thats one of the factors I was referring to above. Or the \"they phoned me during dinner, I\'m going to be an asshole to this lady\" factor....

But somehow, news agency take these polls as gold....Or as REAL NEWS! Hell, some newsagencies just keep doing the same poll until they get the results they are looking for. Ridiculous!
