It's with great relief that I have packed in the painting game. I stopped enjoying it a very long time ago and have tried through various periods to rekindle my love, but it's long gone. I'm binning off the remnants of my small collection, as well as a very decent job lot of paints, equipment and scenics. I'm not posting this in the Trading forum as I wanted to give the general forum goers a chance to get hold of some odds and sods. If anyone is interested in a bit of Oldhammer, RT and Citadel, not to mention a complete starter pack of all the stuff a painter needs, please see my eBay user ID the_reverend_1977. I've made a conscious decision to keep hold of a hardcopy of WHFRP as well as the Heroes of Wargames or whatever the old book is called - got to have some nostalgia material to hand.While I have only recently come back to CMON after years and years, I have very fond memories of the place. I'll keep my hand in now I'm back, but as a man unburdened of the weight of trying to rekindle a lost passion.

Sorry to hear you've lost the love for the hobby, but if that is the case, then no point in holding on to stuff. I hope you have other things to fill the void with.

You could always go 2D and use watercolours.

Having ditched painting a couple of years back, I do have occasional pangs. Hilarious isn't it? I've had 3 similar episodes in my life to date. One massive blocker to a potential come back for me is the use of 'natural' brushes. Sable in other words. I went vegan nearly 5yrs ago and I'm not going to make an exception in my ethics for the hobby. If I were to pick up a few starter set paints and go at it again, I'd need synthetic brushes. I may have asked this before, but has the playing field levelled out between hair and synthetic? There's no point even starting if I can't find a suitable tool with which to daub paint onto a 28mm figurine... Thoughts anyone? I did try asking Rosemary & Co or whatever they're called as a young lad with family connections used to knock about here. I didn't get a reply, sadly. Further to the brush situation, I'd avoid the nostalgia trip and sidestep the coat d'arms paints this time. Therefore, what might be a good starter set for me? I like the idea of the triads. Anyway, tentative post and all. Any comments welcome.

I am in the same boat as you. I've been vegan for 8 years. I haven't tested any synthetic brushes since then, though. I have been using all the brushes I already had, and as I've not been that active with painting I still have a few that are usable. But it would feel awkward buying fur brushes...

That's the thing isn't it. A decent brush lasts ages, and I'm not one for waste. I used them but also tried a couple of synthetics. However, as I was fed up by then, I didn't really give them enough time.

In regard to paints, Vallejo and Scale 75 are just about the best both in terms of quality and Value for money.

Don’t sell or give away your stuff guys. Pack it all away if that’s an option and find something that tickles your proverbial fancy for a while. I’ve found myself that things are always temporary and generally cyclical. Years ago I gave or threw away many miniatures and stash supplies. 10 years later I fell back in love with painting and wish I still had all of the mostly out of production things. It was expensive to purchase everything again. Now I box everything up in the spare room so I can go back to it some day.

Actually I have had some good luck with some of the synthetic brushes I have picked up at the local art store (here in the US though) so they might always be worth a look if you ever desire to paint again. I just treat them with some brush cleaner like the real hair ones and seem to hold up pretty well

To be fair, I needed to flog it all to give myself closure. The thought of the gear being sat in the attic above all the time would have been like the sword of Damocles hovering over my noggin. And I got a lens out of it, so I was happy. I'm thinking now that I need something to tide me over with the extraordinary circumstances we're in with CV19. If I don't get out so much with the camera(s), I'll need something else to do. On that basis, I have purchased circa 30-odd Vallejo paints and inks, extender, files, ball bearings, modelling sand, etc. I got some synthetics from Rosemary's place too, 4 in total. Spent about 120 clams (UK) all told, but honestly that was hardly a hardship given that there will be no pubs and restaurants open, no shops to go to, etc. And a trip to west Wales has gone tits up too. All in all, that means that I might have a bit of disposable over the coming months. Not everyone is that lucky, granted. So, all that remains is for me to buy some old Citadel figures. Ebay for that.

And now I've obtained some Oldhammer pieces. Paints arrive Tues, figures same sort of time. Interestingly, switching to homeworking has exacerbated eyeball issues I had started to experience when using DSE in the office. I get a free test via work and had meant to take it for months. Being at home has resulted in sore eyes and headaches from laptop use. I called Specsavers and they got me in under emergency due to having to spend so long on the laptop under social distancing protocol, and following the examination I was prescribed specs. I get the feeling I'm going to need them for painting judging by how squinty I get looking at stuff close to my mug :glasses-cool::glasses-cool:
