The Gift (big pictures)

I know how demanding people can get for photos of the Golden Demon entries right after the competition. As I won\'t be getting back from Los Angeles until late Sunday, I figured I\'d keep one of my entries secret no longer! (And I updated my avatar accordingly) :)

The sorcerer is completely scratch built.

And here\'s a quick description copypasta\'d from my DA page:

I wanted to capture two different views/styles of Nurgle in this piece. Putrus is a Sorcerer of Chaos, and I wanted him to look really old and rotten, as if he is past any disease and is simply just a corpse. You can see this in the sculpt too. His skin is cracked or peeled off entirely exposing bones, and his robe is torn and stitched. There doesn\'t seem much life about him at all. I strayed from the standard bright greens and reds typical of Nurgle, and painted him in more neutral tones.

The soldier from the Empire though, is painted in the traditional Nurgle scheme. He has a bloated gut with intestines spilling out, lots of growths and gooey things. All together a very unpleasant experience for him.

The thing that ties both together is the lighting and magic. The source light is coming from Putrus\' left side. I didn\'t make the lighting effect very strong, as I wanted the focus to be mostly on the spell he is casting. There is a bright green glow/goo between the pages of his spell book, and this color is also seen glowing from within the victim\'s face.

The base was sculpted from epoxy putty as well. I went with a circular flooring pattern, rather than the boring square bricks that most seem to use. There\'s two different colors of stones to show some of the patterns, but I kept it subtle. You can see some evidence of the lighting effect on the base too.

Anyway, thanks a lot for looking! :)

I really hope this does well for you - lovely little scene, which tells a really good story.

Of course, the painting helps too. Only thing I could do with is slightly better photos - they come up a bit dark for me!

Anyway, it will be a fantastic comp if this doesn\'t win something!

Looks like I am going to have some great competition this year :) Great sculpt and paint job! Hopefully the judges will appreciate this piece as much as we do. Good luck in duel as well as the other categories you are entering!

Excellent job and good luck!

Exquisite job on this piece. I love the colors and how dynamic the entire item is. I think what gets me the most is the colors used on the sorceror. The \"victim\" is in somewhat lighter tones, but once your eye hits the sorceror the tones instantly become dark. I love the details on the cloak the most. Overall, this would have to be a winner.

Good luck, Matt.

Cheers,
Jake

Yep. That\'s why I don\'t take many pictures of myself!! :D

I\'ll have a voting link sometime later tonight once I create a smaller file. I need to sift through my images to find the photos taken from the best angles :)

Thanks again everyone!! :D

Got a couple head shots. I noticed that the first pictures didn\'t show the other side very well.

to be honest: you should get that thing cast (the sorcerer). T\'would make me happy, and likely make me break my oath to not buy anything until I paint (or repaint) everything I have.
