The Golden Compass...

I saw it last night on DVD and it was utter shite. The books aren\'t at all bad, but the film was utter shite.

I recommend you stay away from it if you\'ve read the books. I also recommend that you stay away from the film if you HAVEN\'T read the books.

I thought it was quite good. The best thing about it is that it is about ten years since I read the book so I couldn\'t remember a thing about it (enhancing the enjoyment). I also think it is a cinema film not really small-screen friendly.

Film is like art, subjective not objective.

(speaking as a man who liked \'kingdom of heaven\')

It just pales next to the book. The continuity was poor and the dumbing down was too much to bear. I was left feeling deflated and a bit miffed! I had a few nuts though, so I was happy about something at least :D

I don\'t know why people compare films and books, so much written in books would never work in film and it\'s just like comparing drinking and urinating, they both involve the same fluid but what we hope to gain from the experience is worlds apart.

Also, I doubt any 2 people read the same book because our imaginations draw different pictures from the text.

Of course, this doesn\'t stop some films from just plain sucking I guess lol

i didnt realise you were that way inclined!

Only of a Friday evening it seems!

And as far as drinking beer and urinating goes, the process of urinating a couple of pints out is actually very pleasurable, and certainly better than Carling or Fosters at least!

All they do is make me wee, or fill me up!

That and they taste pissy. Ozzy\'s don\'t drink Fosters, only the tourists do.

We want STRONG beer!:drunk:

Ive never read the books, probably wont either. I watched the movie by DVD and was entertained until the end as I thought there should be a second DVD to finish the story,,I felt we were really left hanging as it was unfinished. I realize this is to lead into a second movie but if they never make a second movie then the first was pointless.

It did kinda suck. Especially how they kept Will (who was played by an annoying little bleeder) alive at the end - utter bollocks! They did capture the feel of certain scenes very well though, I think, like the frozeny bit at the end. The books are superb.

An average childrens movie. haven\'t read the books so I did enjoy the watch. Had a date though... she thought it was chilidish and though the fantasy genre was for children.

Didn\'t work out...

In total agreement!

I saw 80 % of it a week or so ago and didn\'t bother to watch the whole thing. Rubbish! I even told the chick at the flick store what a load it was.

Ooh, it\'s hotting up!

Of course it\'s all set for the second instalment with that ending - the clue is pretty apparent in the suggestion by the wee lady that the alethiometer was satisfied she was delivering \'something\' to the fella Asrael that he needed. Unfortunately it ended before we find out that it\'s her little mate Roger that he wants and ends up killing him! That should have been in the film to leave some dramatic ending - it may have even salvaged something for the film. As it is, the ending is crap. The next one will no doubt be out before long. Any news on production?

No Idea on production, but one thing is for sure.
After reading the book (and being dissapointed) and then your review Fran and I are glad we didn\'t waste £20 buying the DVD.
