The Green Fairy

So yeah, being a bit of a touchy feely 1890\'s kinda guy, when I got the opportunity to try absinthe, I figured the worst thing that could happen is insanity. I\'ve actually found it to be a pleasant alternative to most other liquors. Has anyone else tried the fairy?

Ah, absinthe! I drank it a few times in my first year of Uni, but haven\'t since. Not sure why because I quite liked it, but it\'s probably in part that I\'m not a big spirits drinker full stop (and it\'s quite expensive if you want to get the \"good stuff\").

Mind you, I do like an occasional G&T on a hot summer\'s day. I usually just drink the T by itself, tho! lol

Never felt the desire to try it myself as I don\'t like aniseed. On a night out my mate decided to go for it and had three of them ( the most the bar would serve an individual). After the third one he spent the rest of the night sitting on his stool giggling.lol

The next morning I propped him up at about 9am and he stayed in the same position until 5pm when I had to boot him out so that he got back to his own house. He said it hurt to much to movelol

Now he was used to drinking much more than me so I have never had the desire to find out what would happen if I were to drink 3 of them green fairies.

I like absinthe. I drink it every now and then.

The idea you\'d go insane from it is a bit of a myth (eagerly promoted by conservatives and temperance movements). Yes, it contains (or used to contain) a psychoactive substance (thujone), but in such low concentrations that you\'d get shit-faced drunk long before you could get high from it. What it does have, though, is a very high alcohol level and you will get very drunk very quickly from it. The taste of it makes it very easy to drink (if you like aniseed, that is) so, it is still something that should be consumed with a bit of care.

I remember once at a party, when I was quite drunk and had run out of whatever it was I was drinking that night. I found a bottle of absinthe in the kitchen at the place we were at, and I poured myself a glass. A regular drinking glass. And I didn\'t add any water to it... I didn\'t feel to good later that night, or the whole of next day... :|~

Something people tend to forget as well is the fact that People used to drink absinthe at the same time as they smoked opium and socialized. Of course it was the absinthe that caused the hallucinations, opium would never do that to you! Ever! lol

Hardly likely with modern versions :)

Which brand did you have?

Einion

First time was Absinte this time was Le Torment Vert - a much smoother absinthe.

As long as you don\'t drink it excessively, it\'s no problem.

I think a lot of the horror stories have to do with lack of moderation.
Yeah, a lot of brands are 70% alcohol. Even if you\'re used to drinking regular spirits (usually 40-45% alcohol), this is quite different and a lot harder to regulate.

It would seem so - as some sites mention, in the places where production and consumption never ceased (legal or otherwise!) there are no obvious ill effects, even if the product has much higher levels of thujone than most commercial varieties today, some of which have none or nearly none.

And most horror stories usually come from people who \"think\" the brew is more hallucinogenic than it really is and therefore they get a far more ill effect than they would if they knew a thing or two about it.
Then again, a friend of mine was staying here over the weekend a few weeks back and somehow managed to down half a bottle in a bit under two hours. Let us just say that he was not Mr.Sunshine the two following days. But I myself have never suffered from any ill effects.
Drink it moderately and it is a very nice drink.

Aye. The one horror story I heard was of someone coming home from a night on the razz, drunkenly downing a whole bottle and then collapsing unconcious on the sofa where she was found the next morning by everyone. My bf was there, he said it was terrifying because they couldn\'t wake her up. They were on the point of dialling 999 when she finally came too.

Tried it at Bugmans at Warhammer world at the last Platoon event (what the hell does a geeky gaming centre bar have absinthe for anyway)... I\'m not recounting the story but I\'m sure somone will oblige.

There was a bridge that looked like a cow, and a convesration with a duck, and then vomit.

Drinking games are not big and not clever.

Closest I\'ve come to alcohol poisoning :)

Baaaaaaad, absinthe BAAAAAAADDD m\'kay.

Now I\'m beginning to understand the Blue Sequined Stilletto Shoe.

Let\'s be honest here. If you *WANT hallucinations, go and get yourself some LSD. If you want a pleasant tasting drink, have some absinthe. Just go easy because it\'s very strong :D

*disclaimer - I am not promoting drug-taking. Neither am i promoting absinthe drinking. Have a pint of bitter!

Mike, it was purple... and covered in glitter.

Ironically, I was way too drunk to even be involved in \'shoe-gate\', I was back at my hotel being ill before the rest of the miscreants found their way to McDonalds.

But yes, it was a thoroughly interesting evening all in all :)
