The Hairspray Myth.

Hello everyone. Today, im going to say some stuff, while what I say may shock/disgust readers, you are warned, and i can no longer live in the dark.

Years ago, while painting (for gameing use, some of ours being less then three colours...) me and a painter i know, were having trouble with finishing our minis. My friend came to me one day. Explaining that if we coat our mini\'s in hairspray, this will protect our paintjobs from the rough elements, and surfaces.
A tip we had gotten from another member of the community.

Now I had applied Alberto european salon finishing spray, on minis. Admitedly, it was hard to coat purples, they tended to run. Though lessened, we still had a chipping problem. Perhaps changing temp, much use, and collecting dust caused these chippings.... Keep in mind that these are gameing minis.

Now I ask the chemists, the painters, and the forum users, what say you? Is hairspray a good finisher? No doubt a varnish is better, but can hairspray be a substitute? Should this rumor be forked? :innocent:

Fork it!!!

Hairspray is not made for protecting surfaces against wear and tear. Most hairspray even have trouble keeping a hairdo intact for an entire evening, which is its primary purpose. Buy a decent varnish instead. Costs about as much as hairspray too.

I think it would be best to make sure your minis are washed in Imperial leather soap before painting. Also a good conditioner added to the paint will help prevent cotts and clogs in the paint. Try Timotae mountain dew conditioner for that \"becuase your worth it\" feel. Your paintjobs will feel sooooo much smoother for it and will be a pleasure to game with.
Once dry I would personally hand carry the figures to Nicky Clarke himself for a professional spraying cos the pros only use the best and I have heard that Nicky uses a mix of european hairsprays made specifically for his collection of 15mm Napoleonics.

Hairspray.........

So if you use varnish insted of hairspray(for your hair) your hairdo should stay intact all night long?:D

used to use hairspray to \"fix\" pastel drawings in art class. Maybe that\'s where the myth began.

Same here - used to use Aquanet to hold charcoal drawings in place, as well as pencil drawings.

For those not familiar with this industrial grade hair laquer its one used by fans of the Texas Big Hair look everywhere, and is strong enough to hold hair all day long when applied properly. Hell this stuff makes hair helmets that are damn near bullet proof!!!lol

The dinosaur got it. The old big hair hairsprays (Aquanet?) must be mostly shellac or laquer. This stuff could put a glaze on a pastel or charcoal drawing to keep it from falling apart.

Would also make a pretty good clear glaze for minis. But Krylon Triple Thick followed by DulCoat is much better.

it was hard to coat purples, they tended to run
I assume this was back in the days of oil based enamels? The carrier in the hairspray softening the oil based paints.

So the answer is: if you are coloring your minis with pastels or charcoal, then use hairspray.
If you are using paint, then use a varnish.

And, if you want a hairdo that lasts an entire night, use varnish like Sonny said!

Thats what Aquanet is man. Have you never seen the Big Hair of Southern Women? We ought to be using that shit to uparmor vehicles over here cause I\'ve suffered hair realted injuries from Aquanet. Its water proof, and makes a nice shine on hair.

I paint my thumb.

Rince thoroughly and repeat if neededlol

Any hairspray based on shellac is not durable -- water will affect even de-waxed shellacs, so don\'t put your sweaty paws on them hairsprayed minis, boys ...

I can hear my wife saying...\"DON\'T TOUCH MY HAIR!\"

lol

Remember that Julie Brown video? What was it called? Girl Fight Tonight?
She covers her head with hairspray and her friends lift her and use her as a battering ram to bust down a door.lol

Hah! Amateurs. For real long-lasting stay-intact power, use PVA wood glue. :D

Seriously though, I\'ve been considering using hairspray over another varnish, because it seems to be quite matt. Even if the stuff rubs off, the varnish underneath will last much longer.

The Hairsray Myth Project

Ok, alright.

Can the myth around here, promote varnish, consider Aquanet, invent and patent a pva styling glue. Shouldnt be too hard, seeing as how so many styling products contain the words \"glue\" on their products. Maybe we can combine some p.v.a and glossy varnish into one formula, and sell it (in a sray can) as a multi-use hair, and miniature finishing AND glue product? ;)

@ Modderrhu - The alberto european finishing spray adds to much shine. Like a glaze. If your looking for a matt feel, maybe another spray can deliver?
Though, I\'d like to see pictures of your home-made style before an evening out. :wow:

I think i\'ll go find some varnish. Matt varnish. I am afraid i\'ll have trouble convincing the troops back home to do the same. Time will tell.

Thanks for the responses. I hope NSA will be ok, and all those i\'ve thrown into shock, and those feeling disconected, eyeing the title of my post.

Another vote for using cheap hairspray to fix charcoal, pastel and soft pencil. It\'s actually superior to most fixatives I\'ve used and about a tenth of the price.

Get in.
