Hello Everyone,

Although I haven\'t posted here, hopefully some of you know me from the Wyrd and WAMP forums. :)

Anyway, I took-up miniature painting in 2006 after a long break, but have been a bit reluctant to post my miniatures here. I did so recently, with (which seems to me, anyway) weird results.

For example, I posted http://www.coolminiornot.com/229097 which I don\'t think is a 10, but I would have hoped for a bit higher than a 6.7 . Aside from that, the strange thing to me is that it sat north of 7 for awhile with around 20 votes, but in the past day got another 20 votes, and the score dived. Is this common?

Thanks a bunch to anyone who might shed some light (even if it just to say, \"It\'s a 6.7 mini, go away!\" :) )

Better quality and larger photos would help its case I reckon. Those are quite compressed, despite being well lit. I think a better camera would help here as there\'s absolutely nothing wrong with the technique you\'re using.

I\'d say it\'s a little underrated. I\'d def. give it a solid 7.

Don\'t get too het up on the score front. As Spacemunkie says the painting and scene itself is rock solid (although maybe you could go a little further on the shadows/highlighting). The photo is much better than my ones tend to be, but again I agree that compression has caused a fair bit of degradation on the image quality, so that might be one reason for the score. And I suppose another reason is that maybe some folk just don\'t like the models themselves!

Likewise, it\'s a decent 7 (7.5 on a good day).

I think that\'s fair. My comments on score would nearly exactly echo Spacemunkie\'s, based on what we can see in the photos.

It can happen and it\'s not necessarily a sign of foul play. However, I do think this is underrated.

But opinions vary widely on scores; it\'s important to remember that it\'s not just about the paint but also about the mini - some people might hate the sculpt while others like it, so even with equal appreciation of your paintjob you could get legit scores that diverge by as much as two or three points.

Heyo Thryth!

A few things...

I think parts of the mini are awesome! The pants, love the base, like the kitty.

However, the immediate eyegrabbing parts look a little bit of a let down. The hair could go for a bit more highlighting (I get the same crit constantly too!) and the glove looks a little off given the rest of the mini. Maybe some more work (highlights probably) could\'ve benefitted there.

Hope that doesn\'t sound harsh!

Also....

Wyrd mini\'s seem to have not quite kicked in around these parts yet, and I think some are not giving them the \"cool\" factor I know you and I both love in wyrd mini\'s. I would look at some painters art galleries, like DemonHerald and Ritual and if I recall even some of their stellar Wyrd mini\'s score a little less then I think there paint work is usually scored. But that\'s from memory.

Truthfully the base sculpt will count for a lot. Most of the core members will grade a paint job with the paint more in mind but if people don\'t like the actual fig, expect a shave off the score of maybe .5 to a full point.

And yes a huge dive after an initially more pleasing score is pretty regular.

I don\'t think your mini is anything other than something to be encouraged by. You got the skills, as is evident on a lot of parts of the mini and the base.

I think if the hair was done up to something closer to EricJ\'s Perdita over on Wyrd it would be scoring much higher than 7. At least a 7.5 I bet.

If you\'re interested here\'s a cool page for hair color recipes if you will. I reference it all the time though I have yet to get a hairdo that I really like.

Ok Thryth

\"It\'s a 6.7 mini, go away!\" :D

Joking aside, personally I\'d rate this somewhere around the 7.3-7.5 area.
A number of points to my eyes, Tonal strength is lacking in some areas, specifically around the areas where the skin comes into contact with other areas.
The metalic effect on the Hammer arm doen\'t work for me for a similar reason.
But the one thing that stands out to me is the \"Gloved Arm\", it just doesn\'t look right, to me, as a glove.

Brushlicker and Freak!
Its good, but the NMM gold doesn\'t work for me, its now at 6.9, which I would say is about right.

Hello!,

Thanks for all the responses, and the friendly welcome.

Thank you all for the input. I appreciate constructive criticism, as it will (hopefully) help me improve.

Been a long time, Super! I was thinking of sending you an IM on Wyrd just to say hi, but I guess I\'ll just do that right here, right now. Hi! :)

@Dragonsearch: Thank\'s for the comments. Would you mind elaborating on the \"...Tonal strength is lacking in some areas, specifically around the areas where the skin comes into contact with other areas\" comment? I would like to correct it in the future, but an unsure of what you mean.

As for my original concern. I\'m still somewhat confused by the voting behavior. There was a huge block (okay, around 40) votes well after the miniature was originally posted, which drove the score much lower. I also saw the number of votes drop at one point, with an increase in score. I guess that it is not so much the score itself (hey, I know that I am no EricJ :) ), but the behavior around it that I am confused about.

Thanks again to everyone who replied, and the critique of the miniature!

if you look at the lower of the two images you\'ll see a rough ( and exaggerrated) guide to what I meant.
Adding a stronger tone where two areas meet gives us an impression of reality.
