hi all
just out of interest, perhaps for a diorama im not planning, can firestill burn if its floating on water? what i mean is, if a ship burst into flames, and was then dashed a gainst rcocks, is there any chance burning lanks would ned up on the shore? or maybeactualy on the water, with the fire still going on the planks????

the light from the fire would indeed light up the coast and water as you see in the pic. There can still be fire on water as long as theres a fuel source like oil or something else that is flammable, and a constant supply of oxygen. There would always be oxygen in the air but the fuel source would eventually run out. i dont think a plank of wood would be on fire because the water put it out unless its a large section of wood ???

I guess it would depend. If the planks were covered in tar or oil (wooden ships were often waterproofed with tar) then they might. Especially if they haven\'t been in the sea long enough to be saturated by the water. Oil slicks can burn on water, see this picture:

I think chaos ships fire burns green and purple... I certainly don\'t think it would be your usual orange flamey things.

Mr. Scott was a liar. He said a warp-core couldn\'t be cold-started in less than an hour, because it would break the laws of physics, but then . . . he did it, anyway. Just because the ship was plummeting toward a planet and everyone was going to die.

The laws of physics are obviously situational.

And YES, fire can burn on water, even if it\'s wood. Ship planks are waterlogged on one side. The wood expands as water seeps into it. When one side of the wood expands it seals up any gaps, then the inside stays dry.
If a plank from inside the ship were to catch and then be placed in the water, it would take time for the water to seep all the way through the wood.

sadly true!!

normally i would say untreated wood would go out, but if the decks were tarred or treated in some way, they may still burn. i\'d be tempted to do them all burnt out though, all bluey greys and the like

Good for nothing laws of physics. Fire can burn where ever and whenever it feels like...even underwater - thanks to magic.

Fire can burn anywhere, provided the requirements of the fire tetrahedron and the ability to sustain the chemical reaction have been satisfied.

Basically: fuel, oxygen, heat---+ chain reaction.

You deprive the fire of one of those, and it ultimately goes out.

Take magnesium for example-----if you supply enough heat to set it aflame, it provides everything else it needs---and has the ability to burn underwater....among other oxygen-deprived atmospheres.

The reason it burns under water is that it splits it into hydrogen and oxygen. There has to be enough oxygen present, in some form the magnesium can get at, for the fire to proceed surely? E.g. if you doused it with nitrogen gas I\'m sure burning would cease.

Magnesium will burn in both nitrogen and carbon dioxide atmospheres.

But, to your point, let\'s say it provides \"mostly\" everything it needs...needing very little oxygen to maintain the chain reaction.
