saw it last night in imax...very cool..even wife loved it.

reading the prequel comic that leads right up to the start of this film (COuntdown) fills in some info and makes a bit more sense of the story.

Hopefully going to see it tomorrow. I wasn\'t an especial fan of the original series (ST:TNG and DS9 FTW!), but it looks interesting and I\'ve heard a lot of positive reviews.

Unlike X-men: Origins, which everyone seems to have hated. I think they\'re missing the point really. It\'s not actually *about* the X-men at all, it\'s merely an excuse to have Hugh Jackman runnig around and acting bad-ass in various states of undress for an hour and a half, and it\'s specifically targetted at women like me. For once in my life I\'m a target audience! w00t! :drunk::drunk::drunk:

just saw it. an awesome flippin movie. almost as good as first contact. the brilliance of how abrams opened it up for sequels and allowing new people to the series as well as keeping the old ones was fantastic.

The \"f*ck you canon nazis\" style of the movie was pretty fun. It was different, it was entertaining, and I think it breathes some life into the franchise. I have no interest in seeing Jonathan Frakes in anything ever again and I might not have to!

It had a few great little moments and Simon Pegg was about as good as I had hoped he would be. There were a few awkward moments in the theatre where something was supposed to elicit laughter/applause/whatever and it was eerily quiet. The cosplay folks cheering during cameos and Gene Roddenberry\'s name in the credits was pretty funny and almost worth the price of admission. There was one blond chick in a super-tight red uniform but she looked like potential jailbait lol I\'m a bad man.

Overall it wasn\'t as good as Ironman (which I heard some people saying) but it was still a solid film. I think the upgraded visuals were better done than, I dunno the Star Wars prequels for example, but still a bit OTT for my liking. Serenity takes the cake for me, finding the perfect balance of flashy CGI and gritty realism.

I\'m not 100% sold on the newer, younger, gimmicky kind of style but hey it\'s up there at the top of the heap of Trek films and that\'s what counts. Nothing passes Khan, just on principle ;) I\'d say 3 1/2 to 4 stars out of five.

Coolness. Some minor reservations (e.g. Pegg\'s accent, the choice of the Romulan leader) but just about exactly as good as I expected it to be and I loved all the little plugs for fans of the franchise. Now why can\'t I vote 8.5 on IMDb? Grrrrrr.

It was rocking. The new McCoy, Spock, and Uhura were all highly awesome.

Excellent return to the franchise after the mediocrity of Nemesis and the failures of the Enterprise series.

Sadly, the prequel to the film, Countdown..which has the backstory leading up to the film (comic ends right where film begins)...actually does explain a bunch of stuff that we see in the film and some of it would have been awesome to show as a flashback or something... (ie. the design of the Narada and it\'s crazy enhanced power compared to even future Romulan ships), what abilities the ship can do (considering quite some damage was done to it, etc)....

it also prob would havemade hardcore trekkies happier..but oh well...

if anyone wants to know...i can post the details here to fill in any gaps...

I\'m seeing it tonight, so if you could fill in some of the comic prequel stuff, that\'d be great!

I thought it was good.
I\'m a bit confused about how it fits in with the earlier stuff (or not as the case may be).
e.g. there was a reference to admiral archer and his dog, suggesting that this follows on from Enterprise, but then that Enterprise could do warp 5, but this one only warp 4?

I wqasn\'t particularly impressed with Pegg, felt a bit forced, the rest were pretty good though.

I\'d like to see a TV series with this cast.

Spoilers below from the comic, Countdown (which was co-written by the writers for the movie story)

****************

The story takes place in the future, AFTER Nemesis (the TNG era film). Data is the captain of the enterprise, picard is an admiral, worf is a leader or something of the klingon command, and riker is on the USS titan.

The whole spock/nero story is from that era as we know due to the time travel in JJ Abram’s film.

However, all this other stuff wasn’t mentioned.

After the destruction of Romulus, , as Nero and his crew think of what to do. They end up (note, I’ve only read sections of the comic and notes online from forums/wikis so I don’t have all the info) killing the survivors of romulus who did nothing. Nero’s staff thing, is some artifact on romulus that the senate leader holds. He took it. They then take the ship, the Narada (which apparently looks very different) to the Forge (a secret romulan weapon base). There, they kill some people, and get others to help. After some time, they end up modifying the Narada with BORG technology (from a wreck, due to a romunlan/borg battle). The Narada now has the powers to: cloak, regener-ate damage (like a borg cube) and has some advanced systems. The nanoprobes within the hull also cause it to change it’s shape apparently.

After all this, Nero ends up destroying a fleet of klingon ships led by worf, almost de-stroys data and the enterprise, etc…and that leads up the film…

You can see aspects of Borg technology in the Narada’s design (and the fact that the in-side, has nothing really similar to what you’d expect in a mining/work vessel).

--------------------
And yes, that is captain archer they are speaking off as Admiral, since Kirk’s era is af-ter the Enterprise tv show era. Regading Warp, I thought the warp scale changes as technology improved..Then again, star trek has never made sense speed/time/warp wise. It seems to change all the time in terms of the actual speed they are travelling.

They wanted to tie all the timelines together, to keep hardcore fans happy. And with the time travel spin, they can explain any changes with ‘alternate reality’ so people who want to hate the film, can just think of the star trek universe they like, and forget the rest…

I loved the movie. Even though I am more of a fan of the \"Bill & Ted\" or \"12 Monkeys\" timeline, where you can\'t change the past, I thought it was done pretty well. Almost my favorite movie of the year so far! (second to Watchmen of course!!)
