the price of auctioned minis

i\'m new to this site, but saw that some painted minis are going for over 100 bucks on ebay. One was the \"homepage mini\" today that was painted by some girl that paints for reaper and another was a german gencon winner.

is the only reason they\'re selling for so much because of that (gencon winner and established artist) or do high quality minis painted by nobodys go for that much?

Selling painted minis on E-bay is a crap shoot. Many of the people who sell painted figs on Ebay and get mondo cash for them are established painters with a following. If you look at the people who win thier auctions they tend to be the same people.

Most online mini painters have thier own following. I am not the best around but I have a cadre of sorts who always seem to bid and win my auctions.

It\'s the painting quality and miniature brand that do the selling for the most part. The name may get people \"in the door\" but the bids only come for good painting quality. $100 is not a high amount for a painted figure, especially for popular GW models, so yes, no-names who paint well should be able to get that much. It just happens that people that spend enough time to paint well and take nice photos also tend to become known as the mini-painting community is rather small compared to other hobbies. Alternatively one can pose as a painting prodigy or \"reviewer\" of talented artists to give your name the appearance of painting knowledge and build a following that way. Painting well is probably a better option, but it will be interesting to see what happens when someone tries the other method.
