Can an iPod nano survive a trip through the washing machine?

Soon we shall find out in the sequel to 2005\'s \"Can my cell phone survive a dip in the toilet?\"

The headphones are toast (disembowelled with wires hanging out all over the place and melted plastic in one spot) and the silicone skin has never been cleaner, but the nano itself is still questionable. After a couple hours drying out, the thing seems to be at least somewhat responsive, even if the screen has some funky looking dark spots in it.

I\'ll keep you posted.

Ooh, change in the patterns already. What used to look like a whole bunch of wet spots on the screen now appears to be one tiny little dry spot in the middle right along the bottom edge of the screen. It won\'t look so bad so long as the screen\'s got a uniform dark cast to it I guess lol

I think the key to getting the nano to survive is not to turn it on until it\'s absolutely dry.

My son left his phone in his pocket once. It now turns on & then immediately turns off most of the time. Then it will go about a month where it\'s fine!!! :innocent:

Well I wasn\'t home when it went in the wash, and it was (mostly) dried out by the time I found out about it. It wouldn\'t turn on at first, so I figured I\'d give it some time to dry out before plugging it into a charger to hopefully jumpstart its little lithium heart.

So far it seems to be responding to treatment, but I\'ll keep it plugged in overnight and hope for the best in the morning... assuming I can find another set of headphones to try it out with that is.

Oh, and no this wasn\'t intentional lol It is however a happy coincidence that new iPods are out at the end of the month, so if it\'s pooched then I can get a new generation one right off the bat.

The question that plagues me is: why buy an iPod for 4 times the price of a nice MP3 player? Why buy into a system that makes you pay twice for music you already bought?

have you not seen the adverts, I mean the funky dancing got me straight away. I\'ve got a sony ericson w800 phone and it does all my music goodness (oh and it was free on contract :D )

Yetie, thank-you for reminding me that I already have an MP3 player. It just says \"Nokia\" instead of \"iPod\" on it.

There are plenty of reasons to buy either an iPod or another brand, and I really don\'t care what anyone else uses (myself, I don\'t use a portable music player too often, so I get by with the one in my Sidekick3 cellphone when I do). But as a former owner of 5 different manufacturers\' players (yes, including the iPod), the question above leaves me puzzled... how the heck does it make you do that? ???

I can confirm that USB memory sticks will also survive the washing machine (Although I don\'t know if it helped that were in the pocket of a pair of jeans)

After giving them a quick rinse and allowing them to dry naturally, they worked fine, all data intact.

errr is leaving it plugged in overnight a good idea.....??? or are we going for the can ipod survive a house fire??

My Nintendo DS didn\'t survive the washer not sure wether it was the spin cycle or the 2 hour dry cycle..either way it\'s f@#ked........

I\'v never paid twice?

I have an iPod, but then I have a Mac, perhaps if other company\'s made comparable MP3 players that worked on Mac, and were cheaper I would have a viable option.
But as there isn\'t (or I havn\'t found one anyway) I am quite happy with with my iPod which holds way more music, photo\'s, videos and files (I use it for transferring files to college) than I will ever need it to and it work\'s seamlessly with my computer.

Actually Matty its if apple made systems that played well with others it might make a difference.

For all that MS is an evil empire you can liscence compatablility with their systems fairly easily - thus I have an MP3 player that will play WMA but not iTunes.

I was hoping the Mac/Windows thing wouldn\'t creep in too much, wishful thinking I guess lol

My personal opinion? Vista is a lumbering behemoth that is pretty enough but I wouldn\'t touch it with a ten foot clown pole right now. XP works well enough for me... ideally I\'d be able to buy my Macbook Pro and load XP on there but I don\'t know if that\'s gonna happen. So much damn money :D

I\'ve never really had any issues with my iPods. The first one I loved, then switched to a nano when they came out. Just too damn tiny to say no. There\'s some headaches involved if you plug an iPod into a computer with iTunes already set up for another iPod... no idea why that can get so ugly. It should be simple. Whatever.

Anyway, the big moment has arrived. It says fully charged and I\'m gonna grab some other headphones.

Wow, the screen seems to have dried out completely (no dark spots or anything) and things seem to be working fine. The only noticeable difference seems to be the clickwheel being super touchy... but then again I have been using it through a silicone skin for a year or two so it only makes sense that the wheel\'s more sensitive :D

Moral of the story? Nano is tougher than the DS I suppose.

Oh, and don\'t leave your jeans in a heap on the floor if you don\'t want them in the wash... :innocent:

I certainly never intended to start any Mac/Windows debate, but I still want to know how iTunes makes you pay twice for music you already have. Speaking as someone possessing a modest (~35gb) song collection, but that has a great variety of CD rips, internet downloads, and iTunes purchases, I still don\'t get that comment. I\'ve never payed for any song I own more than once, and I can and do listen to them all on my computer, iPod (got rid of the big one but almost forgot I still have a Shuffle I use while snowboarding), cellphone, Samsung MP3 player when I still had it, and my car\'s CD player.

*shrug*

Not saying it\'s necessarily the best thing for everyone... but I guess I just don\'t see where iTunes has screwed me.

And yes, please explain the paying twice debate.
