I have made a tradition of seeing the Lord of the Rings movies the first day they come out. Just got home from ROTK! OMG don\'t miss this one, very well done indeed. Icredible scenery, awesome beasts (the Mastiphants are tremendous!), plus as we all know a good story!

Hmmmm.... Got to go , I hear a box of The Heroes of the West calling my name! Talk about inspiration!:wow:

Mumaks. Or Oliphants if you\'re a hobbit. Have you seen the miniatures for those things yet? Unbelievable!!!! It\'s the biggest plastic model GW has ever made. Taller than a necron monolith stacked on top of a land raider they say, and it looks it! The model is fantastic.

See! I told you all that ROTK was fantastic! See!

So what about the story...

What were the major changes? Was Arwen at the Battle of the Pelinor?

I already answered you about all that stuff in the thread on the hobbit. No big changes, no Arwen at pelinor, only big thing is the removal of the whole shire bit at the end, which I think is better for the story.

Given the other pointless changes we have seen in the first two movies I fully expect to see Arwen facing the witch-king instead of Eowyn. Makes as much sense as having her rescue Frodo at the ford and that idiotic scene where Frodo shows the ring to a ringwraith and instead of trying to gain the ring at all costs a few arrows scare it off.

Having said that I have enjoyed the movies and look forward to seeing the final installment.

huh

Dennismech! You mean you had already seen it when we had the exchange in the \"monkey gods\" thread? Awesome.

also Kevd82 thanks for the backup. I also enjoyed the movies but will continue to question those things mentioned above (as well as about 40 others) especially when people keep saying \"they had to do it to save time\"...

Yeh, I\'d seen it a couple weeks ago. My dad gets a bunch of prescreenings. I\'m seeing it tomorrow again after my last final exam. I was taunting my LOTR obsessed friend by quoting lines from the movie. lol

Woot! 700 posts!

Aye , I saw it yesterday on the day of release here and was quite impressed with it overall . Did a great job with the paths of the dead , and the Mumakil/Legolas/Gimli bit was priceless :)

Not a whole lot of story changes at all. Arwen doesn\'t show up much at all! Eowyn is great and is also the first Heroes of the West model I painted! Excellent job of creating the necessary dread and fear when the fell beasts show up and start trashing things. I liked the witch king but I felt the helm they chose for him was just a bit dull. Seems they could have come up with something a bit more evil looking.

The Army of the Dead is over the top! Very well done when they sweep into the battle, cool stuff. Legolas pulls off some impossible stuff (but hey he\'s an elf!) and Gimli provides a bit of comic relief (and then kicks some Orc arse):cool::cool:

I did miss the shire bit at the end but the movie was long as it was (not that I minded). At least they have a bit about them getting home and adjusting to their normal lives (Go Sam!). With any luck they\'ll deal with the demise of Saruman in the extended edition next year!

Legolas pulls off some impossible stuff (but hey he\'s an elf!)

He\'s an elf, not a superhero. I thought this bit was way OTT

But all the rest was fantastic :flip::bouncy::flip:

I just figured most of it was physically possible, but it would take very enhanced perception abilities and the ability to essentially speed up your perception of time so that the real world is moving a bit slower. They say many of the old master martial artists seemed to do this. A combination of experience and mindfulness. Him leaving the Mastiphant (Oliphant for the hobbits out there!) is a bit of cheese for sure!:D

To be honest, I didn\'t mind losing out the \'Scouring of the Shire\' at the end, as I think it would be too heavy for those who haven\'t read the books. As it is, the return to the shire and just being regarded as \'normal\' Hobbits worked.

My only gripes were the loss of the \'Houses of Healing\' for Eowyn, Faramir and Merry, and the Breaking of Saruman\'s staff, both of which in my opinion needed to be in the movie.

Overall very well done, and I even managed to spot Peter Jackson as a \'Black Corsair Captain\'.

One really great piece of CGI was the swoop of the Eagles to pick up Sam and Frodo. They actually got the redirectional balance change, spot on for the second Eagle.

Bit of daftness in the cinema we were in, they started to bring up the house lights, just as Frodo destroyed the Ring. (and a couple of people got up and left, thinking it was finished. Tee hee!)

We\'ll be going to see it again in the New Year.

I haven\'t seen a link of the Oliphant yet, but there is a picture at the front of the newest US White Dwarf (288?) with Peter Jackson it is huge. :D:D

Just as a matter of interest....

Human beings have spent thousands of years being pre-literate and living with a purely oral tradition of story telling for the vast majority of that time.

i.e. if the whole history of human evolution was collapsed into one year, we would have been literate for about the last thirty seconds...

This must have been great for story tellers because you could alter the facts so easily to suit the audience.

Now, we are arguing about whether a fictional film, matches the \'facts\' portrayed in a fictional book???

Am I the only one who finds this strange and a little sad?

I don\'t think it\'s at all sad. That is one of the beauties of Tolkien\'s Middle Earth. He makes us believe that it is a place that could actually exist, and that we just haven\'t discovered yet. The way he wrote it and the heart strings he managed to pull makes us want to believe that it is not fictional. So a little strange, yes, but sad, no.:)

I have not explained myself well...

Middle Earth isn\'t sad. It\'s a wonderful place. What I find sad is when people suggest that they have a view of Middle Earth that is the only view of Middle Earth.
I don\'t think even Tolkien himself is entitled to have a definitive view of Middle Earth..sorry:D
