The right to vote and comment.

Can I enquiry...

If I don\'t paint as well, can I still vote and comment?

Can I still based it on the scale given and provide my opinions?

Or has this become an elitist club whereby only the good painters can vote and give comments about others work?

Eg. of my scale.
A piece of sh*t ---- ranking 1.
My work ---- ranking 5-6 (I know where I stand; still working hard on it)
The veterans in CMON ---- ranking 7-8
The incredibles (Eg. Bobby Wong, Arjay, Victoria) --- ranking 9-10

Hell yes!

This site is designed so that ANYONE can vote. You don\'t even have to be signed in. Any idiot off the street can click 1 for any one of the top artists\' minis if he is so inclined.

Don\'t assume because you think your minis aren\'t to the high standard that many on this site are that you are not intitled to an opinion. Everyone has an opinion. If you think a model blows then vote accordingly. If you think a model rocks, vote that way. If you want to comment then do so. You have a brain and you have a valid opinion. Let it be heard.

As far as I\'m concerned the right to vote is nothing to do with your own painting/sculpting ability.

In order to vote I reckon you should be able to appraise whether it\'s good work based on previous experience or what you see elsewhere on this site. But most of all you need to be fair.

In order to comment as advice, I reckon you just need to have some appreciation of the techniques involved whether it be through personal experience or what you have gleaned elsewhere or on this site. If you\'re going to criticise then you need to do it constructively. But most of all you need to be fair.

That\'s my tuppence worth anyway. And purely my own view. Admittedly when I get a comment I will always call up the user profile and try to have a browse through their stuff - often repaying the compliment by leaving comments in response. Even a none-too glowing comment is complimentary in that it stirred the viewer to pause long enough to comment rather than just skipping to the next mini. :)

I agree with what the others have said. ANYONE and EVERYONE has a right to vote regardless of their own skill levels. The one hing I would hope for is that people vote fairly and equitably, but that is only a hope and faith in humanity.:) Plus, eventually sheer wieght of numbers will drown out any \"idiot\" voting.

I, myself, chose not to make many comments or suggestions on people\'s work because I have none posted here. That is personal choice, though, and NOT a requirement. The comments I do leave, I try to keep positive, because who wants a negative comment on their work? And what good do negative comments really do anyway, other than let the person commenting feel (falsely) somehow superior? There is an old adage: If you can\'t say anything nice, don\'t say anything at all.

By the way, I don\'t consider constructive criticism to be negative. Negative comments are like \"This mini sucks\" or, even worse, \"Whoever painted this mini sucks\" or the infamous, \"This mini blows goats\":(

Vote, vote, vote!

I think it is absolutely critical that as many people as possible take the time to appraise the minis on show and cast a vote. If a mini moves you to comment, then comment. Praise can only be positive and criticism, as long as it is constructive, should always be welcome. Personal comments should obviously be avoided and the only plea I would really make is that fan-boy allegiances are put aside. I also believe that the non-specialist, non-expert vote is absolutely vital because otherwise the site could be in danger of becoming elitist and there is already a danger that regular members converse freely in a language and terminology that is inaccessible to the casual visitor. It\'s a bit like the \'Emperor\'s new clothes\' - just \'cos a certain section of the membership have (probably quite rightly) gone ecstatic about the NMM rendition of figures jock strap, doesn\'t mean to say that it would not be useful for someone to say, quite honestly, \"I really don\'t like that colour scheme, it doesn\'t work for me\". Without this grass-roots input, (miniature) art criticism will soon go the way of the Turner Prize:|~

Hmm... I wonder if I may have inspired this little posting?

:p

Of course voting and commenting is not purely for an elitist group! There are those who do have rather warped expectations as to what makes a good painted model though.

I\'d guess everyone does. I can only see through my own eyes after all, so my spin goes into every vote I cast.

I vote as often as I\'m on... but I\'m also guilty for only voting on higher ranking minis because I check out the top ten everyday (thinking it\'s going to be totally be different from yesterday...) But I also comment on those that need it, but not cliche things like \"more practice\" and \"better camera\" if I can help it.

What it all comes down to: I know what I like, and no one else can account for my tastes.

One of the things I love about this site is the fact that anyone can vote and let their voice be heard. If you were only allowed to vote based on your own painting ability than for a start I would have been denied membership and also this I believe would in some ways defeat the purpose of this great egalitarian web-site. I truely value what others have got to say and therefore when I vote and leave a comments I try to be as encouraging as I can. Even though I\'m sure your a much better painter than myself (this is Mouse I\'m refering to) I\'m still going to continue to vote and comment, and I really hope you do to. :) I don\'t mean to send you all to sleep with my sentiments but finally I\'d like to say that this site seems to positively nurture this fantastic hobby & art and without all of its excellent members top artist or not contributing to CMON this might not be possible. I think anyone should be able to comment and vote..... a good \"layman\'s\" view on painted minis allows painters to know what the man-on-the-street really thinks of this art form....

for instance, I gave a friend of mine a mini for Christmas......
(the exact same mini is seen here @ http://www.coolminiornot.com/?id=22058 .... the middle guy with the open mouth and sword ) He showed it to a guy who had never seen minis before, and the guy said, \"Man.... you mean they can paint teeth??!!\"

He then went on to give his view on what he\'d like to see on it, and it was really useful to know what people look for when they see a mini... and what catches their eye first.
