MightyChad's New & Trying to Improve WIP

Started this guy today. I've not painted seriously in too long, and never painted any of PP's Trollbloods, so here we are. I'll try to update as often as I can. But I'll likely paint more than I update.

After doing a base coat of Trollblood base, and shading with washes of liche purple, red gore and coal black, I started shaping the highlights using the Trollblood base, then start glazing more of the red/purple mix into the shadows. I paint the eyes and teeth using Thrall flesh with a highlight of menoth white highlight. When I have those details done I start highlighting the skin by adding menoth white highlight to the Trollblood base. As I work I keep doing glazes of the Trollblood blue to keep my highlights smooth. I also have to keep adding the red/purple mix into the shadows.

Leather is done with Reaper master series Intense Brown, shaded with Mahogany Brown and black washes. Then stippled with Intense Brown, Oiled Leather, and Bleached Bone. Then glazed with yellow ink, then Mahogany Brown. Scratches done with black, highlighted with a mix of oiled leather and bleached bone. Finished with glazes of yellow ink, flesh wash ink, and sepia ink. Final shading of a wash of mahogany and black mix.

Busy, Ten! Farming and such. But I was given strict orders by the missus that I need to get back into my hobby. So I've dived in as much as possible. I've got a couple of entry ideas for the Privateer Press P3 Grandmasters. I'd also like to work on w few things for the Gencon comp as well.

As for everything else, life is starting to settle into a welcomed normal flow now. I hope you are doing well, I know you've been putting out some beautiful work, I have been lurking.

Thanks, krule!

I was a bit nervous about the tartan on my troll, it's actually the reason I've always stayed away from painting the trollkin. But after looking at the examples in the book and in real life I became more confident.

I started with graph paper. I painted a rectangle with Reaper Mastwr Series (RMS) oiled leather, then did evenly spaced horizontal stripes of RMS chestnut brown, and then I did vertical stripes of RMS chestnut brown with the same spacing. In the chestnut intersections I painted a square of RMS mahogany brown. As an accent I placed a thin line of GW bleached bone in the areas between the horizontal chestnut stripes.

As you can see from my image I was less concerned with neatness, I was just going for color harmony. I had also done a stripe with an orange and red, but settled on bone.. On the actual miniature you can use flat colors and correct any mistakes before you add shadows or highlights.

Then when I applied it to the actual mini it was easier than expected, although I still need to work on tightening up the lines and shading and highlighting. That'll come next, but I'm happy with the colors so now into the fine work.

Since I always need to have a couple of projects going I started this guy today.

I wanted to use natural colors as much as possible, so I found a good reference image to use for my colors.

I started laying in colors with various Browns, shaping the facial patterns from my reference.

Then I started adding more contrast and changing the tints.

Great start Chad. I was going to say the scar was too vibrant of a pink, but looks much better in the last pictures.

Thanks, guys.

The scar wasn't planned, but when I got the mini it had a couple of cuts like that. I got rid of all of the ones except for these two. So I made them into scores with about of flesh tone and magenta ink.

Thanks for watching, I'm super-motivated right now, and really trying to paint to a high quality after a huge break!
