Hello there everyone and welcome in my little corner of the awesome CMON forums!!

This is officially also my first post on the forums as I have been a lurker up until now but seeing all the amazing pieces of art that fly by here all the time has inspired me to jump in the deep end, and make a thread of my own.
My hopes are to learn from all the amazing artists on here to hopefully progess nicely along the track of the miniature painter and to hopefully turn out some pieces I can look at and be proud of :)

A little bit about myself for those interested in that kind of jibberish ;) :
I'm a 29yr old consultant in psychology working in a general hospital with some history in miniature gaming who recently picked up the hobby again after about an 8 year lapse (djeez time flies fast...).
Around the age of 15 a buddy introduced me to Warhammer Fantasy and right up until the age of 21, I was pretty franticly into it... I painted up several nicely sized armies, toured the tournament scene with a group of buddies and fiddled around with some other games systems on the side.
However, then life happened and suddenly for several years there was no time for painting or mini gaming. The usual stuff, like college, finding a job, finding a gf, buying a house, renovating a house (well, most of that is done anyway) etc...
However, a couple months back now, me and some friends had a weekend where we decided we would start a new D&D campaign and when I arrived, a couple of buddies were busy painting up their minis... I had a mini which didn't have paint on it, so I sat down, borrowed some paint and a brush and started painting up my Dwarven Paladin for the campaign we would start that same night.
And it felt great!
One thing led to another and I went looking for what was left of WHFB, found that it had died a miserable death but luckily found Kings of War, Mantic's large scale fantasy battle game system. Got a couple buddies (the d&d posse) stoked and we all started working on new armies, getting some games in along the way. I always loved playing Ogres in WHFB and KoW had Ogres as well and pretty nice models for them, so my first project was clear: paint up a new Ogre army.

However, there was one thing from my previous hobby carreer that I didn't want to do anymore, which was speedpainting. Back then I needed to speedpaint to get stuff done for tournaments, demo games etc etc and that was something I just didn't want to do anymore. I wanted the painting to by as relaxing as the gaming as, in the end, usually more time is spend behind the desk then at the gaming table (or at least, that's what fits easiest into adult life). So, from that point on I decided I was gonna paint every model to high standards (my high standards ofc). So, my days of drybrushing and inking were over, time to put on the big boy painting shorts.

So, onwards to the project then, well here it is:
View attachment 48462
The Mantic Ogre Army Mega Deal for a whopping 40 Ogres, 3 chariots and 20 goblins.
Before this arrived I painted up 8 GW Ogre Bulls, a converted BSB and 2 giants I had laying around from way back when to fool around with colorschemes, tones etc...
However, painting all these in a row would probably leave me a bit burnt out at doing the same colours over and over again for that many models would bore anyway and I wanted to keep the painting fresh and happy. So I decided that for every unit I finished, I could take time to paint up a model that would get a spot in my display cabinet.

Here's a couple snaps of what I have painted up atm:

After those I needed smth different to work on and painted up an old Cynwal Elf model I had laying around, trying out NMM for the first time in 8 years!

Most recent work (finished them yesterday) are these 2 Ogre Shooters:

Little disclaimer: I know I take crap pictures :p I'm gonna read up in the photography section about how to improve this but for now I'm kinda stuck on taking pictures with my damn phone...
Secondary disclaimer: even though I said I would try to paint up everything to my highest possible standard, the Ogres will still be gaming figures so I'm not going completely all-out them as that would be a bit overkill imo (Currently allready spending between 9 to 12 hrs on each Ogre, I'm not the fastest painter around ;) )

Any c&c is very welcome, I'll apologise in advance for noobish questions I might flap out and I'm hoping I'll be able to update this thread about once a week with that weeks projects crossing the workbench...

I also picked up somewhere that it was common courtesy to show how that workbench looks so here we go:

Well, this starting post became slightly longer than I had intended it to be, but now that alot of the talking is out of the way, room for (hopefully many) updates and interesting discussions opens up...

Friendly greetings and happy paintslapping,

Corax.

Welcome, Corax! I dig your work so far. The picture quality really isn't too bad. I look forward to seeing how this develops (photography pun unintended).

Welcome to the forums. Your tabletop gaming minis must make an impressive force based on what you are showing us.

Hail, Corax. Welcome.
Ogres look cool. I might suggest you work a few different tones onto the skin of each, maybe starting with some very thin glazes of some red on cheeks, nose, and hands, blue along the jaw. You can get way more crazy with it, but that would be a start. Bailey tends to have very practical explanations of what you want to do with that, so I might start doing some reading in his WIP (or his personal blog). There are a ton of great painters posting here, many of whom will quite nicely help you out with feedback, criticism, and tips.

Hi there, new to the forums here very recently too...

Some lovely mini's in your pics and great flesh tones.

Your workstation pic reminded me that I seriously need to sort out somewhere more permanent to do my painting....

Thanks for the warm welcome peeps :)

@Warrior4520, thx man, hopefully development will prove beneficial :p

@Krulebear: Thx, I'm hoping to indeed be able to put up a pretty impressive force when this project is through. All my previous gaming armies were speedpainted with tons of drybrushing and inking and not alot of detail work so it's actually the first time ever I'm gonna try to make a full army look smth along the lines of the Ogres above!

@SaintToad: thx for the tip, definitly gonna try that out and definitly gonna start digging into Bailey's thread! Saw some of his work so anything he writes up must be golden advice ;)

@Hairster: yeah, having a set workplace helps me so much to just be able to focus on the painting. Before I had that spot, having to unload everything, find a good spot, set everything up etc often kept me from getting started at all (too much hassle after a day's work).

Passed by my local hobbystore today to pick up some supplies like a fresh can of primer, some milliput and a couple of paints to test out. Mostly wanting to see how the Citadel Technical paint that should look like oxidation turns out as I'm not entirely happy with my metallics and I want to bring some more life/depth into them...

But for now: to Bailey's WIP to find the secrets to glazing more tones into skin!!

Happy Paintslapping!

Well, not much has happened at the workstation this week yet due to too much life happening and being too tired from work tonight and last wednesday but I'm looking forward to picking up my brushes tomorrow and sunday to hopefully make some nice progress on the next 2 Shooters. I'm doing a different recipe for my skintone on them and I'm gonna try to glaze in some reds and blue/purplish color to make the skin more vivid. Really looking forward to trying that out and seeing how it works.
Has anyone got any tips on what color to use for those red glazes? I was thinking Vallejo GC Bloody Red but I'm unsure whether it's a good choice?

Only thing I've been working on my tired evenings is a conversion for an awesome unit from the Ogres army list that doesn't have miniatures yet. They are called Ogre Siegebreakers and they are basicly Ogres with huge shields and big weapons specialised in tearing down big things. (They are amazing ingame and I'm having a ton of fun converting up some mini's for them, 2/4 done atm)

What I did do however, is managed to go to Ikea, pick myself up a new chair for my workstation and pick up 2 cheap yet flexible lamps + a thing I'm going to try and make smth out that will diffuse the light nicely and all of that jazz will hopefully allow me to make some better pictures.

Beyond that I'm pondering what my next 'in-between' Ogre Regiments mini will be, could be a Confrontation Mini, could be a random female barbarian model a friend gave me or could be the mini that got me back into painting again, my D&D dwarven paladin... choices, choices...

Hopefully an update with some nice pics coming Sunday-ish...

Happy Paintslapping!

Hi. Welcome to the forums and welcome back to miniature painting!

A couple of thoughts:

1) I love your idea of having a "something different" miniature to work on in between units. I agree that it should help keep you fresh and motivated.

2) Based on your work so far (the pics are really not bad quality - most of us use cellphone snaps for our WIPs anyway) you have a good eye for colour and a natural talent. So I'm sure we'll be seeing great things from you here. :)

3) Feel free to ask any questions. The folks on the forum have been really patient with this paintress, so I'm sure they'll help you out just as enthusiastically. I'm also happy to give my opinion, so be warned!

4) The verdigris technical paint from GW is quite useful I've found - either for more subtle work or even for bigger areas.

Happy Paintslapping!

I think you can make a lot of different colors work, though for skin I would tend to use a pure red to a purple red rather than let it shade off toward orange. Bloody Red I don't own, but you can certainly adjust it with tiny amounts of other colors. I've also begun using a lot more Game Color inks (not washes), which are nicely translucent and very pure in color. The main piece of advice I would give you is to start with very very thin glazes, to the point that you might wonder if it's working until you finally see a change (at which point it will be up to you to determine how dramatic you want the tinting to be). It's always a lot easier to put more color on than to take it off again! You can also layer different colors over one another to get some nice effects, as well (so there might be a region on the nose where a red glaze and a blue glaze mingle). Give it a shot and see what you can do.

@ArchArad: Thank you very much for the kind words, things like 'a natural talent' puts a smile on anyone's face, right? :) I was mainly happy to not feel completely lost when I started over and that I felt I still more or less understood what I was doing. From here on out, it's all a learning experience, experimenting, most likely some failingbut hopefully also some bliss!! And be very welcome to throw your opinion around, I'm not promising I'm gonna agree with all of em, but I'm at least going to listen to each and every one of them!

@SaintToad: Worked on it earlier and indeed played around with it a bit, adding colors I felt I needed. GC Bloody Red tends to come off too rosy so I added in bits of Terracotta and some MC Burnt Red and got a somewhat acceptable result. Not 100% satisfied as it's still pretty rosy but nonetheless I'm glad it went okish technique-wise (well on the faces it did, on the hands it's gonna need refinement.
I think next time I might try with some purplish glazes or starting from a different red...
I also tried working in some blue glazes but I'm a bit too unsure about where to place them, so I went light on them, gonna have to do some more reading about it and find some more inspiration :)
Nonetheless I enjoyed trying it out and it feels like something you can indeed get a whole lot more crazy with! Many more experiments to come in the future!

No pictures yet as I want to get more done today and tomorrow before I make some snaps. I'm also gonna try out a slightly different approach to my reds as even tho I liked the wine-reddish tint on my previous shooters, I would like to make the color a bit more vibrant, thus adding some more contrast into the scheme...

Happy Paintslapping!

Very impressive work mate. Live all of them a nice jaundice unhealthy yellow/ orange/ brown. Which up until now wouldn't even have thought worked really well for ogres/orks etc. love the Andrea/pegaso ork he's great as a proxy and the colors are amazing for him!!!

Tyvm BAM, I'm glad you like what you see!! The Andrea Ork is indeed a fantastic mini. I've had that one stashed in my collection for many years now until it finally found a home in my Ogre army. It was a blast to paint even though I did it pretty quickly after restarting which was quite a daunting task after only a couple of weeks of warming up paintingwise but I'm pretty glad with how he turned out!

Thanks ten ball, feels good to be back and lovings the forums so far as well, double profit!

Time for a first official update in my WIP as I've gotten a little bit done on the next 2 Ogre Shooters. Not nearly as much as I would have hoped as I didn't get to paint as much as I wanted to this weekend.
The painting time however did get lost to other good things as
1) spending some time at my parents for my mum's birthday got me 2 awesome things: my dad apparently owns (might become owned soon) a small lightbox for photography and ...
2) I found a nice big box with a bunch of miniatures I had forgotten about but which used to be my stash of high quality miniatures. In this forgotten treasure I found a bunch of Freebooter models (including some limited edition ones), some Masquerade funny miniatures, and Avatars of War Dark elf and 10 Forgeworld Plague Marines together with some plinths and premade bases as well as some base pimping stuff from Black Cat bases. So, a good day was had!!

Now, on to things I'm less extatic about: experimenting with the lightbox and my 2 WIP Ogres...
The best I have gotten out of the whole thing o far are these:

It took me a while to get the lighting semi decent but I think I've got that figured out okishly... One thing I'm not very happy about is using the completely black background but I allready have a fix in the making as I found some backgrounds at the Massive Voodoo blog (awesome blog!!)
The other thing I'm not happy about is how it's showing the colors... the reddish glazes on the cheeks and knuckles aren't coming out the way they are irl and the red shows more contrast irl as well...
Haven't really done anything editingwise, apart from use a program called GIMP to fiddle a little bit with brightness and contrast to try and get is a bit closer to the IRL colors.
I'm left wondering whether the problems I'm currently facing are bound to me using my Iphone 4S or whether my colors are getting screwed over by having too many black parts on a black background... Next set of pics I'll be experimenting with a different background...
My dad also borrowed me an old camera I could try out if I got it to work (which up until now, I haven't). So many more things to be tried out and experimented with in the quest towards good quality pictures!

About the models: only the skin and the reds are done atm, brown has only been basecoated. Irl I'm pretty happy with how they are turning out but I feel like the pictures don't really do them justice so far. Hopefully my week at work will be a bit slower this week so I'll get some time to get some painting in on weeknights!

I'd like to end this update with 3 questions to anyone willing to answer them:
1) How are people uploading their pictures to CMON? Straight from PC or saved on sites like Photobucket etc...
2) If people are using external websites or cload services, which one is preferred or easiest to work with? (I remember photobucket having an easy way to automate IMG linking to forums...)
3) Any advice on a nice, free photoshopping software which allows easy auto-leveling for colors and brightness like photoshop has?

C&C and advice as always very welcome!!

Happy paintslapping!

Unfortunately your pics aren't showing up for me so I can't really comment on them.

I find that a dark grey background works quite nicely, but it sounds like you have things well in hand for experimenting and figuring out a system that works for you.

Awesome find at your parents' - boxes of goodies that you'd forgotten about are always fun!

With regards to your questions:
1) I've uploaded straight to the CMON gallery before, but I tend to find it easier from Photobucket due to upload speed and reliability.
2) I use Photobucket because it's easy and I already had an account before joining CMON.
3) I use Gimp mainly or Pixlr (online photo editing software) to adjust my images.

Hey ArchArad, thx for the headsup, when I posted them they seemed fine but they didn't show up for me anymore either.
So I quickly made a new Photobucket and edited the post, they should be there now :)

The dark gray background is a good idea as well, I'll experiment with it as well.
Other good news is I finally found the last remaining thing I needed to get my GF's camera up and running again (was missing a battery loading dock) and it's a 16MP one so hopefully I'll be able to make that work properly...
Settings seem to be quite screwed up so alot will depend on whether I'll be able to fix that!

Made a little progress on the shooters but was actually borderline to tired to paint so definitly not my best.

Gonna grab an early night's sleep and hopefully have some more energy left after work tomorrow!

The pictures are showing up. I always had a hard time getting photos to load correctly from a photo sharing service, so I load them directly. Actually pretty easy if using an iPhone for wip photos. Btw..I believe it was massive voodoo that had a tutorial for taking quality photos with an iPhone. I use photogene app to shrink and crop wip photos. For the gallery I have to use GIMP on the PC to make collages.

I have found that the most important thing for taking pictures is to get two or three lamps with daylight bulbs and keep them low on the mini to avoid shadows. Then shut off the non-daylight room light, so it doesn't confuse the camera.

Btw...good start on the Ogre. ;)

Hmmm, my current lights aren't daylight bulbs, only my workstation one is (+ one extra for painting on location), and that's quite a hassle to dismantle every time I want to take some pics... Unless ofc I somehow find a way to make my lightbox work on my workstation... Hmmm more ideas to try out... (Might have to build a custom lightbox for that though...)
Otherwise I might have to put some daylight bulbs on my shopping list...
SO much to do, SO little time, SOOOO much painting to be done! :)

Happier painting went on tonight as I got into the metallics on both ogres (and boy they have a ton of armor on...) and, since I wasn't happy with the metallics on the previous set, I'm gonna put alot more time into them this time...
Basecoated them with VMC Oiled steel and then went nuts with about 8 glazes so far. Not entirely happy yet and haven't even started highlighting them up again so not gonna post a pic as right now it's just looking pretty bland after being washed down so much...

Glad to see that the enthusiasm is still leaping around in your head. :) We shall be patient until you are ready to share. I've heard good things about the Scale75 metallic set as an FYI.

Hmm, good to know as I'm still not 100% comfortable working with either Vallejo metallics nor Citadel metallics...
Basic metal is done now (maybe, might still do smth extra to it) and tomorrow is a bank holliday here in Belgium so hopefully I'm able to finish the 2 Ogres...

Allready started building my next project a little bit, which will be a fun change of pace which will allow me to play around with colors I haven't worked with alot yet as well as allow me to build a fun base for it...

Pics tomorrow!
