The road to Madness or Delight - Hi everyone!

(even though it's over 24hrs and not on very thick...)
I have read somewhere that temperature and humidity in the air may affect the process... also if you blowdried the surface it may took longer to evaporate the most inner parts... Is it okay today?

@Maaenas: Yeah it had dried out more by yesterday but still had some blurry spots which probably needed a little bit more drying... At that point however I looked at it and realised I didn't really like the look of the effect as it was now a bit too clear and plastic-y for what needed to be more swampy, so I ended up giving it a couple more inkwashes and ended up painting some gloss varnish over the top which gave a look I liked alot better.

Also managed to get some pictures made of the finished piece today and I must say overall I'm pretty happy with the result. I see alot of different points I can still get alot better at but overall, I'm happy I tried out some new things (the scenic base, painting black clothing, try to keep the color palette rather cold, making the scrollthing, playing around with the water effect, etc... hmmm maybe almost everything I tried out was new to me :) ) and I'm happy to give it a spot in the display cabinet...

I tried to make a collage so that I'd be able to put it up in the gallery, if I can get that figured out :)

I'll first throw up the collage in here so I can see how that looks and then I'll figure out how to get it up on the gallery to see how my first little display piece fares vote-wise (allthough I don't have illusions of grandeur (yet ;) )

As always, Comments and Critique are very welcome as they really help me to push further and further to learn new things/perfect old things!
EDIT: posting the collage clearly didn't work as it's too small to view and you'd need to click through to Photobucket and then zoom in on there... too much hassle so I'll just throw the pics I made the collage of up here:

Thx Bam, awefully nice of you!! :)

However, I'm not even dreaming of even the low end of your spectrum for the score!

I got it up in the gallery as well and I learned from BaM's thread that I should scream that in loud big letters and link it... so:

VOTES AND C&C very much appreciated :)

EDIT:Bah just checked the pic and it kinda sucks because it's way too small :( I'll have to figure that out and re-upload it, gonna take this one down again!

Great concept and creative use of mini Corax...off to rate it now

Love all the base detail as I said before.

Ok so that took a while to figure out how to get the collage up decently into my gallery but finally it's there:

So: BAMstyle second attempt: VOTES AND C&C VERY WELCOME :)

Question to y'all but what do you use to upload pictures for the gallery? I tried it from Photobucket but it resized the image and always made it too small so I had to upload from the pc directly...

Usually resize in gimp or photoshop to 500/600 pixels wide for the forum and upload direct from PC

No need for a hosting site really on here

This has come out fantastic, dropped a vote for you :) it might just be me but the starkness of the white background is effecting the colours of the mini to my eyes, I gave it a 9, top quality work but I think the blending could be a bit smoother in places (the cape highlights for instance) keep it up I love what you've done with it, look forward to the next one :)

Nice addition for the display cabinets. A couple thought for future projects; the change in direction to being blind was cool, but in the change it doesn't look like the colored walking stick recieved shading on the underside to the level of the rest of the mini. 2nd the flat surfaces of the base could be roughed up more to help push the believabilty that it is an organic formation and not just a pile of cork board. Overall one to be proud off. I give it an 8.5.

I agree with Hairster's assessment.

Voted and commented, I also agree with Krule with the sloped rock formation. Oh and I forgot to mention that the greys on the tunic look really good!

Thx for the comments and votes everyone! Always nice to get some feedback!!

@Hairster: Thanks, it was alot of fun to play around with it as I made the little snake and the shrooms from some Milliput which was a first for me!

@ Sicks: completely agree on the smoothness of some of the highlights, especially the cape! Allready started on a next display level piece with tons of cloth I'll need to apply really gentle gradients to! Did this especially because of how rough some of the highlighting on Neko came out, so figured I need more practice at it! (and everything as well ofc :p )

@Krulebear: I think the white background drowns out some of the shading on the staff as it has received some subtle shading. I didn't want to make a big contrast there however as those real blind walking canes are pretty reflective and look quite flat most of the time... However, perhaps that idea just doesn't translate to a mini awefully well!!
You are indeed right about smoothing out some of the transitions and I allready have some filler on my shopping list for my next shopping trip for hobby supplies which I'm going to experiment a little with to see if I can create some smoother transitions between rocks and other elements. Any good ideas/suggestions what materials work well for this kind of thing?

@Maenas: Thank alot! Definitly true about the white background, I'll have to go find some different shades of grey paper to use as a background. That idea about the grey faded irises is definitly a great one, might go back and add those, allthough I'm a bit scared to as those eyes are really, really tiny as the entire model probably isn't that much bigger than a 5eurocent piece :)

Started working on my next Ogre unit which will be a unit of so-called Siegebreakers (very heavy hitters with huge shields who are tough as nails and hit like 3 trucks ingame) which I'll be converting as they don't have official models yet. 3 of them are assembled, one more to make and I've started on the metallics for the first 2.
As a side project I'm also doing a Confrontation Pretorian Guard to practice on smooth highlighting on wavey cloth and I'm also going to try and give it a pretty cold feel as I might use it for a small diorama-idea that's cooking up in the back of my head...

Hopefully lots of painting time this weekend which will hopefully lead to some WiP pics later ;)

I don't have alot of experience, but i have seen good results just crumbling cork and using that on top of the flat surfaces. Besides that any type of putty, plaster, or filler should work. Just be sure to texture them before they are fully set.

Nice mini!

May I ask what you used for the water effects?

Thanks!

Used Vallejo Water Effect (the basic one, not the Still Water) but gave it some extra love. The base under it has been painted with different shades that match the murky water I wanted to get onto which I applied the water effect. The nice thing is, it's very easy to model into shape a bit. However, after it dried out, it was a bit too clear and plasticky for the effect I wanted so I threw on some green and brown inks + a mix of both and over that, I applied some painted on gloss varnish to get the effect you see :)

Cool! Will have to try that out. I really like the effect you achieved and I'm looking for something similar for a few bases I'm doing, so the tip is great^^

Ive been looking into water effects lately and it seems you can use artists ultra thick gloss medium for the same effect, I hear liquitex and golden are good for it, haven't tried it yet but I'm about to order some to try it out

Interesting to know. Still have a big tub of the stuff I used for this so I'll probably finish that one before moving on to other things. Still alot of things to try out with it when opportunity arises... I allready tried tinting it with paint but for a water effect, that's not going to work, next time I think I might try tinting lightly with inks to see what happens...

Made some good progress on my 2 Ogres and have been playing around some more with subtle variations to the skintone again but I have decided to slightly lower the overall effort going into each individual model as I just had too much fun with the Neko project and want to have enough time to do display stuff. Even if I take the quality on the Ogre army a little bit it should still come out as looking better than average tabletop, which I'm totally fine with!

Do tell how your tinting goes. I really need to be able to tint my water effects, so that is pretty crucial for what product to go with :)
