The top list observation

So I was looking at the top 10 list and it hit me, the order that tied scores (ie all 9.8\'s or 9.7\'s) end up in isn\'t some fraction of the decimal we can\'t see, which is what I figured...but it seems to be the vote count... The more votes the higher rank. It\'s that way in the rankings for all of the different scores.

BUT, looking at top 10 in last 7 it\'s the reverse, the mini with the least votes is higher...

I think it means that despite the call by Corvus for a new #1, it may never happen, since Victoria has sooo many votes, unless something manages a 9.9, which seems impossible!

The observations I make at 2:30am, am I the last to notice this?

i agree on the point that there will never ever be a new #1.
this mini was the first with an extensive osl that got public recognition.
And i think the harshness of votes rose to an extend that its impossible to score a score like 9.8 ever again.
Plus, i think your perfectzly right with the score thing, its impossible to outrun.
mean cmon page :(

I\'ve noticed this before, yeah.

Votes count like that on the overall ranking (IE, the 42/2633 style value) throughout the list, not just on the top ten. Luckily, it only counts the total votes of those images that contribute to your ranking and not all the stuff in the gallery (so you can\'t inflate your ranking amoung others at your level just be filling your gallery with junk).

I\'ve noticed a few people who are out of place in their positions on the rankings. Meaning, you come across a gallery with an overall drop in quality from those galleries above and below. Perhaps the number of votes contributes to this.

Additionally, higher scores attract more viewers and voters due to their ranking. It feeds itself. Without attrition or archiving, those at the very top are probably going to remain at the top unless some amazingly revolutionary idea comes along (and I think you have a taste of how that would work with your maiden :) ).

Of course, the voting system isn\'t scientifically accurate anyway; it\'s mostly a popularity contest. CMON is great for learning/improving, community, advertising auctions, and getting a general idea of how good you are (in that order, IMO), but I don\'t think you can ever take the votes seriously.

I disagree, it is possible for a new no.1, but yes it gets harder and harder.

Nano came pretty close recently with his dread.

I would really like to see some sort of archiving, with an overall ranking and a current year ranking. That would really shake things up.

I really wasn\'t trying to complain about this or anything, I think it was more just a realization I had at 2am last night and of course at 2am I\'ve found it\'s easy to just post whatever comes to mind! :D

Probably easier to program in the site is a current year top 10 and current year artist ranking, than a full archive (maybe along with a browse option of current year?)

I have this feeling this has all been gone over before and I\'m not adding anything new however :p

I don\'t see that as necessary. Many old minis would never get seen

Hey, I was wondering where you\'d got to Smoth

By archiving I mean \"not included in the rankings\" the pics would still be in free rotation.

What if the \'top ten\' list was retired and archived each year. The top dog would have bragging rights for a year then be FOREVER MEMORIALIZED in the archive. Then it would all start with a clean slate for the next year.

Yeah, but I\'d still like to see an overall score from all the years together.

I want my cake and I want to eat it and I want seconds and I want the cherry that comes on top too! :p

The \'old\' minis could still be available to view, just disabled for voting and ranking for the current year. There could be an annual final standing, top 10 etc. Be kind of cool and give people something to aim for - you could easily chart your progress!

As for many old minis not being seen, who\'s looked at all 45000 anyway? Bet you can count them on one hand! And lets face it, 75% of the stuff out there wouldn\'t really be missed even if it was ditched!

Well, I\'m a little torn about this.
I have to admit that Victoria\'s mini is actually my favorite miniature so far, so in my opinion her first place is well deserved.

Second, isn\'t it possible that as new minis are being posted, each time better painted and with new techniques, that the new people that will come to CMON just look at her mini and think that is not so good, and start voting with lower scores, making it step down from number one?

I don\'t know, I\'m just afraid that if minis start being archived, people with few minis posted (my case) will see their scores going down again.

Let\'s face it, we all know that scores do not truly reflect a painters skill for a number of reasons, but we care about them.
If someone starts a thread asking for painters, and both EricJ and I reply, who do you think he\'s going to choose?

All this to say that I don\'t see a solution to this, at least not one who won\'t hurt other people\'s scores.

Of course, I can be wrong, and I would love to hear your explanations to why I am so! :)

Thinking about this, I realized making a top 10 of the year would just make another snipefest it seems. I was so happy when my maiden left the top 10 of the week, as she was fluctuating up to half a point daily with the sniping and the algorithm playing tug-o-war.

However I do think it would be fun to just have a top artist of the past 12 months. In other words a ranking of people who, in the last 12 months have 5 minis over 50 votes. Basically exactly the same as the normal ranking system, but only count minis within the last year?

That way we don\'t lose any of the old classics we can still learn from and deserve recognition, AND we can see who the top active, up and coming artists are as well.

And it means not having to make any major changes to the site for CA, just simply make a new page which makes a query into the cmon database on a new set of criteria.
