There\'s more to life than ranking

Ok, I know that a lot of us (me included) say that scores and rankings are not as important as comments and feedback etc but I got very excited this morning when I logged in and found that I have actually made the top 3,000 for the first time ever :bouncy: How sad am I? You can rate from 1 - 10 if you want but it\'s really the comments and feedback that mean most to me;) lol

That\'s cool. Congrats.

Of course feedback and comments are far more important than votes and ranking (we\'re not going to dig this topic up again, are we? :) ), but this is a place that also has scores. That\'s why many of us put our overall ranking in our sigs.

To be honest, if we really didn\'t care at all about the votes or ranking, then we would never put our work in the gallery; we\'d just post in the forums, if at all.

I care about the scores, its nice to see that i am improving, but the trick is not to let the scores overpower you and become stressed trying to reach a higher score. I worked that one out whilst i was going through a real painting downer. (i started a thread on here a couple of months back, if anybody can remember)

Yeah scores aren\'t the most important aspect but they are an aspect of CMON.

I am interested in my scores so that I know around about what other people rank my painting. I do tend to only take note of the registered voters score though.

You need to have 5 mini submissions with 50+ votes on them, then go onto the add/edit page and your rank will be up near the top.

...and it ryhmnes:D

There must be a bit of all of us that enjoys the competition, surely it is a human trait...

.. but then points for a masturbatory act seems a bit perverse:D:D

Breaking a significant numer in the rankings is always a plus. The downside is that if you don\'t post a new mini, then your rating will tend to slip back down as newer painters and minis are rated above you. :(

But upwards movement in the ratings after adding a new mini is a sign of positve improvement in your paintings. Keep up the good work.

...plus if (when) I do slip back down I get to break the 3,000 barrier again and get even more excited :bouncy: ...provided I manage to finish some more minis

Its good to see your moving up but scores arnt everything. I far prefer having my mates being interested in my latest piece and asking questions when we all meet up.

Unfortunately, I have no-one around here who shares the interest. I lost touch with all my old schoolmates who used to be into the hobby (it has been a long, long time) and get very strange looks from my work colleagues if I mention my hobby (let alone scream with excitement when my latest ebay purchse arrives at the office). My only option would be to frequent my local GW and hang out with the \"kids\" but that just makes me feel uncomfortable. For me \'tis a lonely pursuit and CMON is the only place where I can discuss minis with \"like-minded\" individuals and get feedback and support. This also makes it hard for me to develop new techniques as there\'s only so much I can get by reading and have no-one to show me how things like blending and proper paint consistency etc really work :(

I suppose its hit and miss as to if there are fellow painters near you, Im very lucky as there are four of us who meet up and have a game of warmachine, paint and hangout.

I feel your pain, man. I live in a rinky-dink little town in Nebraska and, as far as I know, no one around here paints minis. I\'ve talked to people at the local craft store, but they haven\'t heard of anyone else who does it. I had to take some of my minis down to show them what it was that I was talking about.

There isn\'t even anything remotely close to a gaming store here in town, either. So I\'m pretty much flying solo as well and relying on the online community for help, guidance and sharing.

I can relate to all of this. In fact, the last time I was in the \"local\" store (45 min drive), not only was I probably the oldest one there, but I was the only female there. I was twice an alien there. :(

I agree about the painting techniques. I can \"get it\" better by actually seeing how it\'s done rather than reading about it.

But thank god for the internet. :D

<han solo>Don\'t get cocky, kid.</han solo> You will find that you have to produce BETTER work just to stay where you are in the rankings, I have actually dropped in the rankings since I began to paint better, just because there are so many damn good painters here and I am not producing ever-better paint jobs. It\'s a terrible treadmill, but it does force you to run ;)
